Dear Mom, I miss you.

I wish I could tell you how much you meant to me, even when we stubbornly disagreed.

I wish I could tell you how much I enjoyed your sense of humor, your laugh, your smile, your general naughty outlook on life. You were such a child in so many ways. That used to annoy me. Now I wish more than anything that we could make silly jokes about frivolous things together, and make each other laugh so hard we cry.

I wish I could tell you how beautiful you always were to me. How your eyes, where so blue and so shiny, even in your seventies, you were still a stunner.

Mom, I wish I could let you know how much I appreciate the influence you had on my life. How much I respect you for instilling values of honesty and responsibility in me.

I wish you could be here now to talk about the latest Cheney outrage, or how Obama really does seem to be the real deal. I wish you could have had more time to celebrate the emergence of our country from the nightmare we've been in. I'm glad you made it to see a Democrat in the White House again.

Mom. I want to thank you for everything you did for me. I want to thank you for raising me a Democrat. I want to thank you for every door you knocked on, every campaign you worked on, and to tell you how cool I still think it is that you served as a delegate in '72. Even though you were an alternate. You looked so glamorous with your big sunglasses when we saw you off that day. We were so proud of you. We loved you so much. And we still do.

I miss you Mom, and I am grateful to have had you in my life.
