Poll question: Off beat Vacation Spots
Which would you go to if you were given a round trip ticket, two weeks' accommodations and all expenses paid?

2. Rapa Nui!
Rapa Nui ("Easter Island") was, improbably, once a great center of Polynesian learning. It had the only written Polynesian language, Rongo Rongo; alas, nearly all the specimens were burned up for fuel after the civilized* folk arrived.

Hmmm.. two weeks... I'd sure be ready to go back home by then; it is kind of isolated.

3. I wonder if anyone at DU has ever been to Rapa Nui...
That's my choice. But I agree with you that two weeks is a long time to be there.

4. The key here is "all expenses paid".
Iceland is one of the most expensive places to visit. I might stand a reasonable chance of eventually getting to one of the other locations on my own (well except for Antarctica), but Iceland is one destination I will need help with. Seems like a beautiful and unique place.

8. Visby, Island of Gotland, Sweden
This is a best kept secret. Several hours off the coast of Sweden, in the Baltic Sea, is the medieval town of Visby on the island of Gotland, perfectly preserved and absolutely charming. The ruins of churches are beautiful rose gardens and the town is actually large enough to spend a few days walking around. It is as picturesque as could be. It overlooks the seas. The rest of the island is not as interesting, but one can go bike riding and hiking. If you time it right, I think sometime in May, there's a terrific medieval festival where all the townsfolk dress in medieval costume and they have traditional games, foods, and performances. It's really wonderful, and apparently only known to Swedes, Finns, and Germans.

10. Madagascar with Ulan Bator running a close 2nd
Either place would be fascinating.

Madagascar because it's tropical and I could visit the lemurs, some of which have been released into the wild from the Duke Primate Center.

Ulan Bator would be faboulous. The Monguls are supposed to be extremely hospitable.
