1. Crater Lake is out of the way of most things, but...

Depends how you get to and from there...also realize that all these things are far apart as Crater Lake is way out there:

East of I-5:
Fort Rock, Oregon
Bend, Oregon
Klamath Falls (not so hot on this one but people like the old town)
Lava Beds Nat'l Mon. (far NE CA)
Burney Falls, CA
Mt. Lassen Volcanic NM (the road's probably closed though)

Near I-5:
Castle Crags State Park CA (near Dunsmuir, CA)
Oregon Caves (not sure when it opens for summer and "near" is a stretch)
Jacksonville, OR (old historic town)
Sundial Bridge, Redding, CA (kind of cool, short stop to walk across the Sacramento River)
Sutter Buttes, CA (an oddity and maybe not that interesting, but hey  )

If you are driving from San Diego, you can go up I-5 and go east on 97 near Weed and it's a pretty straight shot straight up to Crater Lake and within a couple hours are most of the first list of things I mentioned.

Also, if you are into birding, the area near Malheur Lake is one of the best in the world and April may be a terrific time to stop there, as it is on the flyway.

It's not Disneyland, but eastern Oregon has it's own type of beauty.

I'm curious what you're plans are. I've been up there many times and it's one of my favorite places to go (not just Crater Lake, but also Oregon in general).

3. April?
Isn't that kind of early for Crater Lake?

From October to June, Crater Lake National Park is a snow-covered wilderness. November through April is assuredly snowy with poor
visibility and fair to poor driving conditions, but wonderful skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. With snowfall still lingering on the ground in early July, winter defines Crater Lake National Park more than any other season.

5. Well, in my opinion,

this is the one place in the world that everyone should go to at least once in their lifetime.
