3. Not for a long time
had to grow up dammit

If it were legal though, or medicinal, I'd be wrestling in my mind about it because it was not so much a problem in and of itself. I still wouldn't do it I don't believe.

Good times, bad times, I know I've had my share....

6. Death on my allergies.
Edited on Mon Mar-02-09 10:07 PM by leftyclimber
I'm allergic to pretty darn near everything to the point of developing allergy-induced asthma. Smoking up made me want to scratch my throat out. I don't do things that require a Benadryl just to partake (this also applies to dogs, which give me hives without the Benadryl "bonus" to the full-time allergy meds).

Always liked smoking it, never interested in eating it or otherwise getting it into my system. After a while I just sort of lost interest.

I still drink, though. (ETA: But not beer or wine, as they, too aggravate my allergies.)

7. I stopped
because when I would come home from work, I would smoke. I would surf the net, get stoned, eat, and lounge around. Nothing wrong with that really, but it would cause anxiety if I had to do something after work, or if someone would call me unexpectedly. I was also getting a little out of shape. This was causing me to not feel too good about myself, and as a result I smoked more. Stuff's not cheap either, so that would also cause me anxiety. I was a regular smoker for about 10 years, never really had a 'problem' with it but within the course of about a month it suddenly wasn't much fun anymore. I would smoke and it felt like someone was giving me a tight bear hug. I would say to myself 'I don't like this, I don't like this feeling'...like an anxiety attack of some sort, I would wait until it passed...but i'd still want to smoke to take my mind off of it. Very weird.

I'd taken time off from smoking before, but it was time to take another break obviously. I was starting school, which made it hard psychologically - I had always used it to help me focus on my schoolwork, so I figured I'd take a break for a few days and pick it back up as I usually did. But after a few days had passed, I decided to try to make it a 'long' break. It was hard at first, my lifestyle was really centered around enabling my ability to smoke when I wanted, and I felt like I had a lot of free time I didn't know what to do with. It felt weird to surf the net and not get blazed. But I devised ways to keep busy, for example I realized I really had no hobbies anymore, so I began to work out and take care of my body. It made sense - it was a way to boost my self esteem, my health and it gave me a hobby..it was a good choice. Smoking no longer really fit in, as I spent more time on the elliptical and weightlifting.

It's now been over six months, and I feel like a completely different person than the daily smoker I used to be. I don't miss it one bit - I'm much happier and I have better self-esteem. More money to spend on other stuff, too! To answer your other question, I didn't replace the pot with alcohol, in fact I rarely drink, maybe a few beers a year. If anything i'm 'addicted' to being completely clean. When I first quit, it was a trip to be completely sober...it had been so long, it felt like a new experience. I'd consider smoking again, i'm in a much better state of mind these days, but I still have no desire to - maybe some day I will.

22. Sure, no problem
I realized that it wasn't fun anymore, and it was just maintaining the habit. What started out as fun, became 'medicine', a way for me to treat the anxiety I was feeling, but in reality I was treating the symptom and not the cause. Once I addressed the root causes of why I was anxious, I no longer felt I needed it. I don't regret choosing to smoke it for so long, it was fun and probably kept me from developing a drinking problem - before when I took small breaks from smoking, I would drink instead. Now when I feel anxiety creeping up on me, I go for a walk or go to the gym an burn off energy. At $30/month it's much cheaper too!

Sounds to me like you took a long, hard, critical look in the mirror one day; or as Shakespeare's Henry V said, "I and my bosom must debate awhile..."

That's something people rarely seem to do anymore, regardless of the specific self-critique being examined. :)

I prefer beer.

Now, I would avoid it because there's a (slim) chance I can get tested at work. These days, I think I'll try to keep the job.

Maybe when I retire in a few years ... if I can find it. I have no idea anymore on how to buy, what's it cost, etc. I guess I'm culturally out of touch.

9. Never have
My lifetime smoking experience is limited to two times when I was compelled to smoke a cigar by my battalion commander. Since he was writing my officer performance report, i wasn't going to argue the point. Both times I got so jacked on nicotine that I couldn't sleep for two nights.

But I got a great write up from the colonel...

http://www.youtube.com/v/XrtbLTHrZgw&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01&border=1

You poisoned my sweet water.
You cut down my green trees.
The food you fed my children
Was the cause of their disease.
My world is slowly fallin' down
And the airs not good to breathe.
And those of us who care enough,
We have to do something.......
(Chorus)
Oh.......oh What you gonna do about me?
Oh.......oh What you gonna do about me?
Your newspapers,
They just put you on.
They never tell you
The whole story.
They just put your
Young ideas down.
I was wonderin' could this be the end
Of your pride and glory?
(Chorus)
I work in your factory.
I study in your schools.
I fill your penitentiaries.
And your military too!
And I feel the future trembling,
As the word is passed around.
"If you stand up for what you do believe,
Be prepared to be shot down."
(Chorus)
And I feel like a stranger
In the land where I was born
And I live like an outlaw.
An' I'm always on the run..........................
An Im always getting busted
And I got to take a stand........
I believe the revolution
Must be mighty close at hand.......................
(Chorus)
I smoke marijuana
But I cant get behind your wars.
And most of what I do believe
Is against most of your laws
I'm a fugitive from injustice
But I'm goin' to be free.
Cause your rules and regulations
They dont do the thing for me
(Chorus)
And I feel like a stranger
In the land where I was born
And I live just like an outlaw.
An' I'm always on the run.

I smoke pot about once or twice a week.

Although,I do try hard to stay away from the bong,
because it seems to get me super stoned.

And if you've ever smoked extremely good pot, especially
through the bong, you start to hallucinate.lol

Pot is like most things,it's good in moderation.

Legal here in Canada for medicinal purposes,so it's only
a matter of time before the Canadian govt regulates it
for recreational use.

36. I quit just over 6 years ago.
I had smoked pretty regularly for about 12 years, but I just didn't enjoy the feeling anymore. It had become a habit that I was maintaining for no good reason.

Added to that, I was out of work and it's damn near impossible to get a decent job without passing a drug screen, so it was in my best interest to clear the THC out of my system.

I ditched tobacco at the same time; a 17 year habit, 2 packs a day for most of those years.

I do not 'drink' now, unless you count a single glass of red wine about 3 to 4 nights a week, and that is following my doctor's advice concerning my cholesterol.

On top of all of this, I work in Substance Abuse Prevention, basically teaching kids to avoid the pitfalls of addiction. I can do my job and drink a few glasses of wine a week... but I don't think I could rationalize using an illegal substance while telling others not to.

Even so, if pot were made legal (decriminalized) I doubt I'd start smoking it again. After all, I quit in the first place because I just didn't care for the feeling anymore.

I'd like to go along. Just for a day or two though. It had it's own unique "colorfulness" for sure, but it was also a very tumultuous, uncertain, and worrisome time for a lot of young people.

If I had a choice, I'd rather come of age in the 80's rather than the 60's. I think it would have been easier to keep your footing.

I have had a few contact highs. :D

Being a nonsnoker has give me an outsiders view of how pot effects people.

I have watched band/play rehearsals grind to a complete halt once the pot was brought out. Pot produces lots of ideas (not all of them good), but very little action. Too much produces a LOT of inaction. Pot smokers always think it has no negative effect on them. I have seen no more than three daily smokers who I can say it really didn't effect in a negative way. If forced to hang out with a pot smoker or a drinker, I'd still take the pot smoker.

On edit: pot can bring out the numbskull in people, like the smoking jackasses over in DU who think its funny/good to get their cats high. :eyes:

I agree with your estimation of it's effects. That's certainly how it always affected me anyway.

And getting pets "high" is abuse as far as I'm concerned. Sorry to hear there are some here who delight in doing that. Even if they think the animal enjoys it, they don't KNOW if it's beneficial and benign. Therefore they should never do it.

I had also been working at my current full-time job for about a year and I decided I needed to stop just in case I happened to have gotten caught, i.e arrested because of it and I figured I needed my job more than smoking pot so I quit.

I miss it from time to time. Those were good times when I smoked.
