3. I think I say it both ways, just as I spell gray/grey both ways. I like to mix it up.

5. Depends on the usage
If its used to describe a defeat of some type, for example, "The enemy army has been routed,", then I pronounce it rout.

If it's used to describe a road or highway, such as route 66, then I pronounce it as root.

7. Root
Aside: My mom pronounces "route" as "root" but pronounces "root" (as in tree) as "rut-rhymes-with-put".

I mean... :wtf:

8. "HI-way"
the term "route" is never used in the West, not to refer to a major numbered thoroughfare, at any rate.

But, when I'm back East, it's "root".

11. Properly.
(ie: root) Because neither Nat King Cole, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Asleep at the Wheel, nor even Bing Crosby ever sang "Get your kicks on Rout 66".

17. Root when talking about a road, Rout when talking about how to go somewhere.
For example, Root 1, vs, What Rout are you taking to get to Florida?
