Christ, am I a slow learner or what?
I took two minutes today and put up thermal (insulated) curtains to replace the semi-sheer flimsy flowered ones on the patio door between the living room and the screen porch (which same door I sit four feet from in the evening, reading and writing).

Duh. Eight hours later, despite it getting dark (and colder outside)in the interim, the living room is fifteen degrees warmer than it was last night - even with the thermostat cranked down another two degrees, to 60.

Like I said, I'm a little slow on the uptake.

1. So you're saying the thermal drapes are working, eh?
I could use some of those. It's 50 degrees out here, and I'm freezing.

5. No need for the stone wall. I've seen many times how people who live where
it's warm really do develop "thin blood" and can't handle chilly temperatures when they visit the North, even if they grew up in the north.

I've been in warm places and I know 50 can feel chilly. Hey, just pile up with your pooches on the couch, and you'll be nice and toasty.

6. Yeah, I'm about there.
50 degrees bugs me now. I have no idea how I'm ever getting on a snowboard again.

12. Only time I say the word "y'all" is
when I've got a Beastie Boys cd in and I'm rapping along with AdRock who uses "y'all" quite a bit.

2. My dear Redstone!
Um, am I missing something here? You don't strike me as slow on the uptake!

Of course the living room is warmer, silly!

But you knew it would be...

Nice to see you tonight!

4. Peg, we've owned this house for eight years! That's why "slow" applies.

3. A few winters ago I finally put up those plastic window cover kits
Edited on Wed Jan-14-09 11:22 PM by JoeIsOneOfUs
it was amazing how well it worked. It was essential as I was unemployed that winter and keeping the thermostat low like you are. My apartment's windows were so poorly insulated there was a wind chill factor in that apartment - the noise of the plastic crinkling was better than the cold! I also felt dumb for waiting so long - I blame it on growing up in the south!

My current apartment has its own problems- the area inside the front door is so cold the snow from my boots doesn't melt for hours! I'd hate to invest a bunch of time and $$ in weatherstripping it though.

You did good.

9. Yeah, I'm eagerly waiting until aerogel windows are affordable. That stuff is
astonishing in its insulating ability. Until then, as you say, all we can do is fabricate an airspace, which is the next best thing.

13. I had a friend who worked at Lawrence Livermore Labs.
Who brought to a volleyball game a beaker with a chunk of aerogel in it.

It was fascinating, almost unearthly, if we're talking about the same thing. (about 8 years ago)

14. Yes, same thing. A fascinating material, if only someone could figure out
how to produce it economically. Essentially frozen air, as it were, and full of so many possibilities.
