our back door doesn't latch unless you push on it and our roommate, for some reason, will not make sure it's closed.

every morning, when i go out for my first smoke, i find that the door is locked but not latched. well, this morning it was open because it's windy outside and i can only assume it blew the door open.

both my boyfriend and i have talked to our roommate about this but he doesn't seem to get it. our city is a very safe place to live as far as violent crime goes, most victims of violent crime here know their attackers. however, we do have a pretty high property crime rate. those are are primarily crimes of opportunity and i'm not keen on giving anyone the opportunity to break into my house. we live in a nice neighborhood, but that doesn't mean a whole lot in these types of situations.

the door probably wasn't open long, it's during the day and the car is in the driveway, but i'm still pissed about this. my bigger concern is that my boyfriend goes to work at 7 and takes the car, while my roommate gets home around 8. if he doesn't make sure the door is closed, we're both asleep and we don't have the car in the driveway to act as a deterrent, there's nothing to say that someone won't just waltz into the house and help themselves.

i try to be very conscientious when it comes to being safe at home. i always keep my car locked up and the doors are locked nearly all of the time if i'm home, so this is very frustrating to me.

how do you get through to someone who pays absolutely no attention to anything around them?

1. Put some sort of buzzer or bell on the door that goes off when it's open
