39. I am 44 and my husband is 43 and we were planning to have a baby

This is our first and we've been trying for over 3 years. I am 17 weeks now and just had an amniocentesis done on Monday to check for any problems. We'll get the results in about 1 1/2 week.

Besides a herniated disk in my lower back that happened in my first week of pregnancy, it has been a breeze so far. No morning sickness or weird cravings and very little weight gain. I started out slightly overweight but with excellent blood pressure and cholesterol and hope that it will stay that way.

We also just found out that we are expecting a boy.

Both of my kids were complete surprises. We had decided to never have kids when the first was conceived, and I was depressed for the first few months. I knew it would kill my graduate school career (it did) and change me in ways I didn't want (it did). Of course, it was the best thing that ever happened to me, and I enjoy all the ways it changed me.

My second kid was worse. We had again recently decided never to have another kid (or at least that's what my spouse told me she had decided--I wonder about that) when oops. I was in such depression then that I just refused to acknowledge it until after about five months. I didn't tell anyone, wouldn't talk about it with anyone my spouse told, wouldn't shop for baby stuff (We still had most of the old stuff, so that wasn't a problem). I didn't want a kid in my mid thirties, knew I'd be in my 40s while she was in first grade, and just didn't want it to happen again.

But of course, it was again the best thing that ever happened to me. I've told both kids that they were accidents (those types of things slip out, so I thought I'd introduce it early as a joke so it didn't get revealed at just the wrong moment), but that if I'd have known that they were the kids I would get, I would have planned it.

Anyway, Congo-Rats, whether you feel they are in order yet or not. :)
