J.T.-one of the most touching holiday specials
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0158681/
I can't find a copy anywhere...it was so moving.
J. T. Gamble, a shy, withdrawn Harlem youngster, shows compassion and responsibility when he takes on the care of an old, one-eyed, badly injured alley cat days before Christmas and secretly nurses it back to health.

When I was a kid, I saw that and cried my frigging eyes out.

A similar TV movie that I still remember blowing me away

To All My Friends On Shore - with Bill Cosby, I have to IMDB it now.
