What was your favorite musical discovery of 2008?
Here is mine. I was a little buzzed and can't be for sure from this slow ass laptop but I think Misshoneychurch turned me on to it.

It plays well to those I love so dearly.
______________

Billy Joel - Goodnight, My Angel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LraZEoRnkPc

Goodnight, my angel
Time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away

Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
WHen we went sailing on an emerald bay
ANd like a boat out on the ocean
I'm rocking you to sleep
THe water's dark
And deep inside this ancient heart
You'll always be a part of me

Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry
And if you sing this lullabye
Then in your heart
There will always be a part of me

Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabyes go on and on...
They never die
That's how you
And I
Will be
One day

3. All things Seether
I'll just pick one I haven't posted before

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2NYWmS9uSs

The Gift

Hold me now I need to feel relief
Like I never wanted anything
I suppose I'll let this go and find a reason I'll hold on to
I'm so ashamed of defeat
And I'm out of reason to believe in me
I'm out of trying to get by

I'm so afraid of the gift you give me
I don't belong here and I'm not well
I'm so ashamed of the lie I'm living
I'm right on the wrong side of it all

I can't face myself when I wake up
And look inside a mirror
I'm so ashamed of that thing
I suppose I'll let it go
'till I have something more to say for me
I'm so afraid of defeat
And I'm out of reason to believe in me
I'm out of trying to defy

I'm so afraid of the gift you give me
I don't belong here and I'm not well
I'm so ashamed of the lie I'm living
I'm right on the wrong side of it all

Hold me now I need to feel complete
Like I matter to the one I need

I'm so afraid of the gift you give me
I don't belong here and I'm not well
I'm so ashamed of the lie I'm living
I'm right on the wrong side of it all

Now I'm ashamed of this
Now I'm so ashamed of me

42. Tom Zé
Fantastic Brazilian musician, probably in his early 70s now. My point of reference is his album "Fabrication Defect", re-released by Luaka Bop in 2001, which is a concept album that skewers the corporate first-world mentality toward the third world as androids with "defects" that require them to think, feel, dance, and dream.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw6cvex3czk

This is the last track off of this album. Roughly translated lyrics: http://www.luakabop.com/tom_ze/cmp/lyrics3.html

47. a kidnap in color--their song "lust be a lady"
it's soooo catchy/addictive. when you hear it you sing it in your head for DAYS.

they have the song on itunes and on their myspace page
http://www.myspace.com/akidnapincolor

Lyrics to Lust Be A Lady :

We hit it off and on again
we only sleep in the same bed
love was buried deep beneath the place we lay our heads
we all know talk is cheap but you talk it sweet
this is a lesson for the desperate: dont let her into your head

who knew a goodnite kiss could lead to such a mess like this

darling read my lips "we're going down like sinking ships"
singing ohh, ohh, oh oh
girl youre in my head, youre in my heart, youre in my bed
screaming ohh, ohh, oh oh

this is the last call for love
these young hearts have had enough (i think)
oh god i think ive had too much
that doesnt mean we're getting down on the floor tonite
our hips they crash to our heart beats, but love was fast asleep.
when your blood runs cold you know im still the one that gets you off

im not the type of gent to play these type of games with you

i thought love was alive but love was just a lie to...

63. My kids turn me on to new things constantly
. . . so it's hard to pick just one. Off the top of my head (and I'm apparently 3-4 years behind the times on this one), The Books might be one of the stranger ones. Some are pretty straightforward and largely instrumental, but most are like little movie soundtracks you have to figure out WTF is going on. Definitely difficult listening sometimes, especially when you're under the influence of something or other.

Another one that's especially good when you're slaving at the computer and need some background noise is Stars of the Lid, which can be hysterical (how long can one note be?), yet amazing. Once I stumbled across these guys, I started recognizing them as the soundtrack in tons of things (movies and commercials).

When desperate for something new, I'll rummage through my daughter's tunes, which is mostly weird Japanese shit or emo stuff, but occasionally has something listenable, like Sufjan Stevens or (especially) Kaki King (that girl can really play--her instrumentals are approaching Leo Kottke good).

75. It's fun to bridge generations
I turn my kids on to the classics (my son is presently all about Quicksilver Messenger Service and he's got me hooked on lots of electronic goodies, like Aphex Twin (yes, even the creepy, silly stuff).

70. Aren't they, though?
They went from a band I had never heard of to one of my top 5 favorite artists of all time the first time I heard them.

Woe has nothing up, but I doubt you'd like anything reviewed on "depressive-black-metal-blogspot" anyways. :D

72. I bet it was me who posted the suicide video.
See if this rings a bell... :)

And I'm a dolt. Here's Woe's Myspace page, which I didn't even think of before. Doh. I'm a sucker for the riff at the 50 second mark of the song Solitude. It's just one dude playing everything.

Good luck...you're in for it unless you run for it. :D

77. Several groups
I'd missed several significant groups from years gone by, and it was a delight to finally discover their music. Some of the more notable "oldies but brand new to me" groups and individuals include Blues Traveler, Collective Soul, Dave Van Ronk, and just a week ago I began taking a serious look at some classic Brewer & Shipley.

There are many more, but those top my 2008 Giants list.
