Need some of them patented Lounge vibes for oktoberkid
My neighbor and I just took oktoberain, ThinkBlue1966, and oktoberkid to the emergency room. oktoberkid is having serious abdominal pain. He's normally a sunny little guy, but he's plain old suffering right now. Could be appendix, a hernia, something, (not sure yet) but he's in really bad shape. :( He's in good hands at the local emerg (Level 1 Trauma Center), but he's hurting something awful. It's always horrible seeing a little guy in that kind of pain, and oktoberkid's pretty special, so that makes it worse.

Please send your best thoughts his way, along with support for his wonderful moms.

<<<<<<oktoberkid>>>>>>>

-worried lefty

(I'll post updates as I get them. Probably not until morning, as oktoberain and ThinkBlue are staying the night at the hospital.)

2. My dear leftyclimber...
Thank you for letting us know! He is such a cute little guy! My heart goes out to him...

I can't bear to think of him in pain...

Hope they find out what's wrong and more importantly, fix it....

Hugs to all...

4. He's at a great hospital.
It's a teaching hospital, and the folks there are passionate about Doing Things Right. One of the residents in pediatrics is on my soccer team, and I'm hoping he's on tonight, because he's an absolute gem.

They'll do good by him. I just want them to do it FAST and NOW, because eight-year-olds should NOT have to feel so awful. He couldn't even stand up straight, his tummy hurt so bad.

I just hate seeing kids suffer. It's so unfair.

Hope it's just one of those nasty GI bugs. But whatever it is, it sounds like he's in the right place.

11. Thanks, FloridaJudy.
He's definitely in the right place. I just hate seeing him feel so terrible.

I knew something was horribly wrong from ThinkBlue's tone of voice on the phone, but it was pretty shocking to see him doubled over and in serious pain.

I'm glad we have such a good hospital here. If we were in most of the rest of WV they'd have the facilities to slap a band-aid on him long enough to call a MediVac. We're really lucky to be where we are.

18. I'm hoping no news is good news.
It means "they" moved fast and oktoberain and ThinkBlue aren't pacing around the waiting room (I'm sure they aren't -- even the security guard was in a hurry to get him inside when we pulled up).

I'll post updates as I get them.

23. Hey everybody--we're home. An update.
Apparently, OktoberKid has a mild inguinal hernia that we didn't know about before, and while climbing up the ladder into his top bunk bed tonight, a loop of intestine got trapped for a while. It resolved on its own at the ER, thank goodness--they gave him pain medicine through an IV, some fluids, and ran a BUNCH of tests just to be sure. They sent him home with us tonight, but we have to see his Ped doctor ASAP to see about getting surgery scheduled to fix the problem permanently. They can insert a piece of what amounts of Kevlar mesh inside of him where the "tunnel" is, so his intestines can't get stuck down there ever again.

This isn't too surprising, as I had suspected it from the start based on the instantaneous onset of severe pain and the fact that he was pulling himself up the ladder when it happened. His father had the same "defect," and had to have surgery to repair it as an adult after a much more severe herniation. I've heard these things can be genetic.

Anyway--OktoberKid is now sound asleep, and we are not far behind him. Thank you all so much for the good wishes and thoughts, and thanks especially to our Heroes of the Day Leftyclimber and her friend Lit-Loving Neighbor, who came to the rescue when we desperately needed a ride to the hospital. We managed to catch a taxi home, so now ThinkBlue and I are off to bed. We are exhausted.

Goodnight all, and thanks again.
