What are you listening to?
I'm overwhelmed with Christmas music. Reminds me how much I just won't get to do or get done this year. So, I've got David Gilmour "On An Island" playing.

:)

But wait, then I'll want warm breezes and sand. x(

And hell, more than finish it, The Wind is actually a pretty solid album, given that he was recording it with the Reaper breathing down his neck.

19. Ain't that the truth. But I've thought about that before, and I think it's kind of self-deceiving...
I mean, of course the good ones are gone. So are most of the bad ones. When you look at the whole of human history, or even just limit yourself to the great writers or songwriters of the 20th century, chances are that most of the people you talk about are going to be dead, y'know?

And the contemporary artists who could match someone like Zevon are only halfway through their careers and thus appear to be less talented when in reality, it's an apples and oranges comparison because, for it to be realist, you'd need to comp;are them both after they're life's work is over.

Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that, in any conversation such as this one, the greatest and the worst examples will always be dead and gone.

20. True, but
it seems the truly great ones have died so young and long before their careers were finished.

22. It does seem that way, but I've also given this some thought, and...
it seems to me that a lot of artists, especially in music, do their most vital work when they're young. So, who's to say what a Jimi Hendrix or a Jim Morrison would be doing now? Hell, in Morrison's case, I'd be willing to bet that if he was still doing music, it would probably suck pretty hard.

Point being, it's difficult to say that those people who died young could have necessarily offered the world a lot more truly great work.

Of course, there's also people like Bob Dylan, who's still kicking and has released his greatest work since the early 1970s in the past two or three albums. So, there's always room for a return of the muse.

And anyway, in Zevon's case, while the man died relatively young at 56, he has a pretty extensive ouevre. Most songwriters could only dream of being as good as he was for as long as he was. Which isn't to say that I don't wish he was here -- the past few years would have been fertile ground for the man, as his music seemed to thrive in hard times.

25. A tune I just recorded last Friday night.
It's the fucking saddest song I've ever heard. I don't know where it came from, and I don't think it's ready for public consumption. The lyrics just came to me as we were rolling, and this "stream of consciousness" thing happened as if the words had been written down already. All I can say, is it a song about finality. Whether about a relationship, or society, or life is hard to say as the words can be interpreted from multiple angles. It really was like I was channeling something, and I haven't been right since that night.

ver1
"In a pool of consciousness, I swam to deep...
Now, as a circumstance, I get no sleep...
Seems everywhere, and everyone, don't know what happened.
We've come undone."

ch
"And it feels like Armageddon
All over again.
It feels like Armageddon
I'll miss you my friend..."

There are a few more versus, and choruses, but it continued on like that for 14 min. I will be re-recorded right after Christmas with a more structured arrangement. The music is like really sad Radio Head-ish.

I can't wait get this record done!

he/she is just so overwhelmed with Xmas- Get this....
Married 35 years, no kids, one dog, lives walking distance from work and does not have to travel for the Holidays. How bloody overwhelmed can he/she be? This couple have had time to talk about whats for dinner (5 calls) what wine to buy (2 calls). They are making up struggles(some struggles) out of the clear blue sky. I feel like screaming..... Have a couple pints, stick a TV dinner up your arse and be done with it, for fuck sake!

31. Marillion's new "Happiness Is The Road"...
They pulled the same kind of marketing stunt as Guns n' Roses' "Use Your Illusion I & II" and Springsteen's "Human Touch" & "Lucky Town"...two separate albums released on the same day instead of just releasing a double album.

Funny that you should mention Gilmour...this time around Marillion is really wearing their Floyd stripes. There's one song that's very reminiscent of "Echoes," and they have always had the melodic / bluesy Gilmour sound in the guitar solos.
