Poll question: Which do you tend toward, being a spendthrift or being frugal?
Edited on Thu Dec-11-08 12:40 PM by redqueen
I'm definitely way over toward the frugal side of the scale. Expensive body wash is a luxury for me.

I know some people who use shopping as therapy / as a hobby though. Like my ex roommmate, Lisa. I had to get the rent and an estimate of her half of the utilities as soon as she got paid, or else I'd end up covering her half.

2. No question about it. I spend $$$$ much to my husband's dismay.
I like to shop and I love fashion. Now I have a little girl who I have to keep fashionable as well. If that lottery would hurry up and come on....

14. My friend's mom is like that...
she will buy a new wardrobe for people every year, whether they need it or not!

You're going to have so much fun playing dress up with little Bella... they make the *cutest* stuff for baby girls. :)

I am likely to spend it. But I have stopped using credit cards for minor purchases.

On edit: I voted let's dance! :bounce:

9. It depends on the circumstance
I will unhesitatingly be a spendthrift when it comes to good wine.

Life is too short to drink the shitty stuff.

:D

12. There are some very reasonably-priced but still excellent wines...
and some horrible crap that's way overpriced.

And even if it's good, I'm still not spending that much... on principle. :P

11. It's use related
for me.

If it's something I expect to use a long time, then I will spend money for quality. After all, the cost is amortized over the longer life of the product, vs buying a cheaper one and then having to repurchase some time later due to obsolesence or breakage. Think KitchenAid mixers. They're spendy alright. But, you'll never have to buy another mixer. Nor several other appliances. Ever. (I don't have one, but that's an example of what I would spend money on vs a 20 mixer that will go on the fritz 2 years after I buy it.)

If it's something I expect to use only once or in the case of clothing only for a season or two, then discount is fine.

13. I think a spendthrift is more just about spending...
kind of recklessly... not just when considering something that you want to last a good while.

frugal most of the time, but then I spend in spurts. I always tend to do that at the beginning of the month, too. wonder why. :P

16. MrsCoffee won't let me go to the grocery with her anymore
because when I go, the grocery bill is always twice as high as it usually is.

"Let's eat steak tonight...I'll grill, I just need charcoal and lighter fluid. Well, if I'm getting charcoal anyway, might as well have steak a couple of times this week."

"Ohhh...I really NEED that pudding cake! It's got pudding right in it!"

"Do we have ice cream? No? We do now."

"As long as we're having steak, let's go surf & turf."

18. Hahahaha... you sound like my kids!
They are always in the mood for steak. Always. Even living in an apartment where grills are verboten is not enough to get them to stop asking.

The ice cream, I buy. They're kids... they should have it. :)

20. I walk the line down the middle.
I like to spend my money, and I do so, but I don't spend more than I can afford. My only major debts are my (very modest) mortgage and the loan that bought my car. Apart from that I owe £527.14 on my single credit card which I will clear with my Christmas bonus, and my regular bank account is in the black.
