Tire recs please
from wise heads in the Lounge.
Had the driver side rear tire start to go flat at work a couple of weeks ago.
Put some air in at the corner Fart N Fetchum, went home checked with the gauge, and mr 'pede put more air in (we have a small compressor).
Called the Buick dealer who said to go to another place because they have better prices/selection.
Don't want to spend over $450 so not to put in on credit card.
It's been holding up ok until it looked squishy this morning...need new tires.

1. 4 new tires? What's the year/model of your Buick?
NEVER go to the dealer for tires.

2. www.tirerack.com
the site allows you to put in the make/model of your car and other requirements then gives you a list of tires. Most have opinions by other buyers. I bought two tires from them a few years ago and a local garage mounted and balanced them for about $12 a piece at the time. Saved a lot doing it that way.

At the least, you can narrow your search and shop locally.

4. Go to Costco.
Their prices are always great and so is the service.

They frequently have great coupon deals on Michelins, if you buy four, but I don't believe thay have one on now.

But I'm sure you can find great tires there on excellent tires, even without the coupon deal.

6. Thier selection is pretty limited sometimes.
I checked last time I was pricing out a set and they didn't even carry tires for my car.

9. True, but I think in the OP's case, Costco would have several to choose from. nt

5. call around, including various locations of the same chain, especially if you have an odd size.
Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 05:21 PM by LeftyMom
I got my all-weather Firestones for the same price as some cheap-assed no-names because they're an odd size, hardly any cars take them, and the shop wanted them out of inventory. But I wouldn't have got that if I hadn't called around and asked a few different nearby shops what they had to fit my car.

7. I've been using Big O Tires for years now, and they've been great for both price AND service.
Looks like you have at least one in the Amarillo area--might give them a call for a quote.

10. I have Toyo Supremes on both my car and my p/u.
They ride a little stiff for civilians, but for us boy racers they handle very well. If you prefer a good riding car, try Cooper tires, which are made in the good ole US of A. You should be able to find a set of either in your price range. Get new valves as well as high speed balancing (which is pretty standard nowadays).

12. I was going to suggest Toyo, too
They are great on our car. I even think they helped our gas mileage!

13. We went with Michelin Symmetry
with a snow tread. I say *we* but actually *I* was at work and not there to snoppervize. Got them from a locally owned place that's been in business since the 70's. Hubby went a little over what I wanted but they look like really good tires. At least he didn't run amok with my debit card.

14. Only a little over is good for Michelins
I like locally owned shops myself, and they usually have as good a price as anybody when all is said and done. Get much snow there, do you? ;-)
