Are you more of a "thinker", or a "feeler"?
Do you make decisions based more on logic, or emotions?

I'm definitely a thinker, but I do have an emotional side, too. However, I like to be really logical and consistent.

1. INTP here
That could be an interesting thread. I wonder how many people know their Myers-Briggs type?

6. Wow...we're one of the rarest types, you know
INTPs are pretty rare.

It would be an interesting thread. Maybe I'll start that tomorrow. My guess is that there are a LOT of "I" (Introvert) types here -- more than in the general populace.

15. I see some places that list us as the rarest types
Edited on Wed Oct-22-08 10:03 PM by DarkTirade
but some list others as the rarest. I guess it depends who's taking each test. But last time the subject came up there were a few INTPs here on DU, more than I would have expected.

Maybe a site like this tends to attract that kind of personality. :P

8. When I was younger, I occasionally tested as a weak "F"
The scales are always really close on that one for me, although on the others I have strong scores. Especially the introvert thing -- I'm almost off the scale on that.

I tested as 100% introverted.

12. It can be hard being an introvert in a world that favors extroverts
Extroversion is looked on as the ideal. And it's not that I can't be extroverted -- I can be the life of the party. But the way I always explain it is that an introvert goes home from a party and is exhausted, and wants to cocoon the next day, while an extrovert wants to know where the after-party is (that is, is energized by all the human contact.)

at least when I tested 9 years ago I was. I think my I may be leaning more towards the E as I get older.

Actually there are some skeptics here *cough* Orrex *cough* who are a little skeptical of how useful or accurate the Myers-Briggs personality test actually is. In fact, IIRC, it was a bit of a flame war

Maybe I won't do that then. :)

There's that old "soft science vs. hard science" thing again. heheheehe

Actually, I might enjoy talking to him about that. At the very least, as a manager I have found it to be a very useful tool for starting a dialogue in work groups, to help people understand and appreciate different people's preferences for processing information, communication, etc. It's expecially useful for helping resolve conflicts within teams.

16. Another checking in
INTP to a fault. I break everything down into logical explanations, including feelings and emotion. Which of course, you cannot really do which is why I am no longer married to my ESFJ spouse.

21. My best friend is an ESFJ
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 12:10 AM by dawgmom
That's probably not a coincidence. I think we instinctively seek people out who complement our own personalities. It's worked well for us for more than 30 years. She calls me on the things like that that drive her crazy (being oblivious, etc.), and I call her on her black-and-white "J" view of the world, her need to have everything planned out to the last detail, and her tendency to be "rule-bound."
I think we've both grown as a result, and I can't imagine my life without her in it. I'm sorry things didn't work out for you and your wife. :(

13. It must be a "sue" thing.
If you're really a Sue that is. :-)

I have the exact same pattern. I'm exceedingly logical - sometimes to a fault - but have a finely developed emotional/empathetic side as well. It can be hell trying to balance the two, can't it?

3. Interesting question.
I give myself up to my feelings. But during the early days of my now ended marriage, my husband and I saw a marriage counselor who made the comment after a session or two, "Normally I find it's the woman who reacts based on emotions. In this case, I'm seeing the opposite." I think as an adult I balance the two and when I don't, it's by choice and I'll announce it before stating my tainted opinion.

You really can't go wrong being a thinker, AspieGrrl. :hi:

18. All my online tests say INTP on a huge margin
I'm analytical to a point where it can damage relationships. I ~have~ to know why something doesn't make sense until I have an explanation. I consider a piece of information which doesn't 'fit' a ball bearing dropped in an engine block which bounces around and creates all sorts of havoc until it's explained, and then the machine can continue humming along.

I suck at empathy, as much as I try. I'm just really not good at it. Then again, I have no real experience with it. That I'm aware of.

19. Yep
I'm with you, good explanation by the way. Everything can and needs be categorized in order to be understood. My ex was ESFJ, so being complete opposites it's amazing we were able to stay together for any length of time. We're still good friends, just can't live together. She calls me a vulcan, a nutty professor and a robot.

Definitely more the "feeler" type!

However, I do have moments when I'm just as hard-headed an intellectual as you'd ever like to meet...

I do enjoy being logical too.

This has to be the ONLY opportunity I will ever have to use that Confucius quote.
