2. I can give you a practical and unemotional opinion about that.
If you haven't suffered, you have nothing to compare any situation with, so you can't really experience joy. I think one of my favorite emotions is a sense of relief when a situation doesn't have the bad outcome I had anticipated. I don't mean to say that the more you suffer, the greater your joy will be. That's just something people say. But joy does exist, and suffering doesn't last forever. In other words, water seeks it's own level and fire cools.

6. So that raises a question - is it better to be ecstatically happy 100% of the time,
but not realize just how happy you are, or is it better to be incredibly jubilant for only 50% of the time, but fully appreciate it because the other 50% of the time really sucks?

4. Crisis=Opportunity for growth
It sucks to hurt. I find it's easier to bear when I seek out whatever positive can be found and try to focus on that.

And yes, I believe the joy is made much sweeter by experiencing pain.

8. I've heard that and I guess it's true, but sometimes I feel like,

"I don't want to grow any effing more!"

15. Growing pains
I can relate. But it's like complaining about monsoon season. All you can do is sit tight until the rain ends.

11. No. There is no virtue in suffering.
The brain's release of endorphins during times of joy is irrelevant to any suffering that has occurred.

12. Hell, no! Look for small joys in the midst of pain; a child's smile or laugh,
a moonlit night, leaves turning to reds and golds. Find a reason to smile to get through whatever
is causing the pain.

14. Pain may bring perspective -
somebody who is ill for a very long time and then is healed, for example, relishes health while the rest of us pay little attention to our bodies. But I think pain in relationships is totally unrelated to the joy found in them.

17. Only if you have to
I haven't found any alternative--that wouldn't kill me first--to "going through the pain"

Joy, for me is often a choice, but I practice a lot and laugh out loud every chance I get
