I've been pricing UHaul trucks and other moving options
UHaul is probably the cheapest, but I'd have to drive a 24' truck towing my car. Not my idea of a good time going through Chicago.

ABF (the trucking company) has a deal where they'll drop a trailer at your site for 3 days and then drive it to your destination and leave it for 3 days while you unload.

Both will require me to hire crews to load the furniture and the boxes. I can't ask friends at my age to do that - I'm terrified someone will hurt their back. These crews are licensed, bonded and insured.

So while I spend the weekend sick (gawd my head is gonna break) and waiting for phone calls, I'm trying to figure out how to move.

Does any one know of someone who's used the ABF service before? Sounds like a good compromise to me...

1. Have you considered PODS?
Edited on Sat Oct-11-08 04:55 PM by GOPisEvil
http://www.pods.com/ Edit - someone I know used them successfully.

I'm so thankful my company is going to pay for the shipping of my stuff. I'd be stressing if I had to pay for that myself.

Good luck.

2. I'll check them out
moving everything up here cost me nearly $4000. That's with me packing and the company loading, driving and unloading.

I still have the issue of loading and unloading and I'm sure I'll need several PODS hauled down.

Thanks!

3. That ABF deal seems like an interesting idea.
Of course, not having labor makes that tough.

I'm going to want to ship my car, too. I have no clue how much it will all cost, I should get an estimate next week. Then I have to fly up and find a place to live.

4. Fun times!
:)

I had a car shipped on a moving van that was going east from Portland with a partial load. It cost about $600 to move it that way to Columbus. That was many years ago though...

My parents looked into commercial vehicle haulers, moving companies and hiring a driver before they shipped the car I bought from them. The moving company was the cheapest at the time.

6. Even at our "heaviest"
furniture and stuff-wise, we never filled more than 1/2 a trailer. My parents shipped all their belongings/furniture, the 67 corvette and their 89 Honda to Oregon on one trailer. The corvette was in a compartment above the truck cab. My father couldn't watch as the driver pulled it up and over all their possessions... ;)

13. Nothing is definite yet
I don't have an offer from the company in Milwaukee and they rely heavily on money that is hard to come by right now. Things will ease up, but it's not known when. Also, since I don't have an offer, I don't have any idea of a salary. They could easily decide not to hire until things settle down in the markets.

I got a call from a hospital in Columbus (Lelapin had two surgeries there when she was little) for a position I applied for several weeks ago. I missed the call requesting an interview on Friday afternoon, so I'll find out Monday what my schedule will be. I'm going to push for a phone interview, but sometimes it's not a good thing to call the shots during the initial phase.

So, no, I don't know anything for sure. x(

I *do* want to come back. Keep your eyes open for good, QUIET rentals around your area. Oh, and they have to allow cats. :)

Yeah, too bad you don't know anybody strong and limber who can, like, make couches fit up narrow flights of stairs and through doorways when even professional movers couldn't do it. :eyes:

Seriously, I can have everything you own loaded in a truck in an afternoon. By myself. And if this is the route you are going to go, I can ride down with you and unload, then take a rental car or bus back. Save your money, you need it for other stuff right now.

How many trailers did they drop? Did you have a crew help load and unload?

28. We initially had 3 cubes delivered but only used two of them
Edited on Sat Oct-11-08 06:20 PM by KitchenWitch
My parents, my husband, my son and I loaded the cubes on the Minnesota end. Took about 6 hours.

When they dropped the cubes here, my "brother in law" (really my husband's cousin) had a crew (he owns a produce distribution business) come over and unload for us. Unloading actually went faster than loading.

On edit, these cubes were not a trailer. They fit three on a flat bed trailer. (I think the dimensions were 6 x 7 x 8.)

Edited on Sat Oct-11-08 06:25 PM by lizziegrace
unloading is much quicker. I'm going through "stuff" this week and hope to have a yard sale this weekend. I have entirely too much stuff and if I have to pay rent in two place for a while (I have a lease here), the apartment or tiny house in Columbus will be even smaller than my place here.

Bleh.

I have a two bedroom place with living room/dining room and my side of the basement is packed. I hope to clear at least 1/2 of the basement out before I move. I only have one appliance - the dryer I had to replace. And lots and lots of books. Lelapin has at least a dozen or more boxes. Her biggest vice... ;)

30. I think it is because you have to be more careful when loading.
The cubes made the move easier because I knew that we loaded it, and anything left behind was my own damn fault. :D

We bought a set of padlocks that only we had the keys for, so unless the locks were picked, we knew there was little chance of theft.

Would it be possible for ZombieNixon to recruit some friends to help load a truck? For unlimited pizza all day, and beer afterward, some college guys might be willing to do his girlfriend a favor and do some heavy lifting for a few hours.

Are there any DUers in the area who are younger than us? All DUers can't be middle aged.

I really hope this move happens without any problems.

38. The landline can't come through the whole that the super
drilled in the wall.

Because my hands don't work anymore, one of the guys at work prepped the phone cable for me. He stripped each end of the cable, mounted the RJ-11 jacks, and taped it on with electrical tape. But because the jacks are already on there, and the jacks can't fit through the whole, I can't run the cable into the temporary apartment.

I can't widen the whole because the wall is concrete. I would need heavy equipment. I can't widen the hole by hand. So I have to do without a land-line for 4-5 weeks. :(

I'll have to make due with a cell phone, or make my longer calls from work where I have a head-set.

my paper bag would be small too. :)

I'm hoping to have a yard sale this weekend, or at least get the pieces down to the garage for a Craig's List sale. Then I'll get a local charity to come pick up the rest.

Most of my antiques aren't worth a lot, except to me. They belonged to my grandmother and great-grandmother. What's killing me are the books. Dozens of boxes of books belonging to Lelapin and a couple of my own. That, and my daughter's a packrat. Her whole life is stuffed into closets and boxes.

44. We used ABF to move our stuff up here.
And were really happy with it. Nothing horribly destroyed. We had three medium size pods, and paid below $3000 from Dallas to Milwaukee.

So for a smaller amount of stuff just over to OH, you should be OK.
