Milk-Chan is indeed a Special Needs kitteh...We need a Veterinary Neurology Appt
Edited on Sun Oct-05-08 06:45 PM by bicentennial_baby
In addition to the nystagmus, which I'm pretty sure is congenital and harmless, it seems that Milk has Feline Hyperesthesia as well. Also common in Siamese. Her symptoms are the rolling skin on her back, the tail grooming/biting, and the almost constant tail swishing. As of yet, no seizures or serious issues. Hers seems to be exacerbated by stress and excitement. Although she will swish her tail constantly until she falls asleep, pretty much.

But I think she should see a Veterinary neurologist anyway, in case she needs medication. It's deemed to be something of a feline OCD. But it can get bad, if it progresses and is untreated.

I signed on for this, and I'm not giving up on my lil Sis, so it is what it is, I guess.

I'll keep y'all updated :)

5. I'll pay whatever it takes...I just want to make sure she's ok
It's totally stress related. She was so calm tonight, laying on the couch with me, and Kitteh jumped up and got in her face, and her tail started going nuts and her back skin started rolling. It only lasts for a minute, but it's concerning.

:)

21. I have to, she's my Lil Sis!
If you saw her in person, you'd fall in love in a second. She's just precious. And I say that even though she decided to use my back for a launching pad yesterday morning when she had her crazies and gave me a 2 inch gash.

:D

24. Dora did that to my side, down just above my hip.
The side of my abdomen looks like a promo poster for Nightmare on Elm Street.

They aren't trying to be mean, they just get scared or excited. I LOVE MilkChan, just from the pictures of her. She is so sweet. :loveya:

MilkChan is the same color as our April:

4. Compared to other cases I've read about, hers is mild
But, best to get it checked out by a Neuro. She's not chewing her tail off, and not seizing, so I doubt she needs Phenobarbital yet, but I want get her checked out.

My poor checkbook. x(

7. Egads, I hope not.
I've heard of vets using Tramadol in young animals like this rather than going to Big P.

Did you get a good rec on a neurologist?

9. Here's my problem...My Vet has a bit of an ego problem
He doesn't like it when you want a second opinion. He gets...unpleasant. He's otherwise a great Vet, but I've become unhappy with him lately. Sigh.

There's a good Vet Hospital close by with a Neuro on staff, but I'm not sure how to get in w/o a referral. I *think* my in would be that I have a free coupon for a GP Vet visit there that's good until the 17th.

What do you think?

10. What do I think?
I think you should try to make an appointment with the other vet hospital. If you can't get in, via coupon or otherwise, I'd suggest PMing a certain friend of yours in Florida that would be happy to make some calls. He's an idiot, but he knows people.

Make sure you have your records from the first vet so you don't have to request them. They don't need to know about the second opinion.

11. Alrighty then
And I was planning to get copies of both of their records anyway, under the pretense of a pretend move out of town. Just in case I decide to switch. *wink*

And I'll be in touch.

6. Wow. I hope you have the time, attention and patience
to care for her the way she's going to need.

I've worried that two of my cats might have had medical issues, but we were fortunate and they were fine. I don't know that I would be able to handle some the special care that some cats require.

8. If she does have it, the basic treatment
is alleviation of stressors, and medication, either anti-depressants and/or anti-convulsants. Her case seems mild, so she may not need Meds.

I'm pretty sure the nystagmus is congenital, and doesn't need treatment. One Vet diagnosed her with Vestibular disease based solely on that, but she has no other symptoms, and nystagmus is a common congenital defect in Siamese. She seems to have compensated for it quite well since birth, as she can run, jump, play and stalk her fuzzy mice just fine. She isn't dizzy or stumbly or anything.

13. She's fine, and carefree, but I noticed the symptoms...so I have to attend to them
She seems perfectly happy and content, but I can't pretend I don't see what's going on with her, even if she seems to not be bothered at all.

My luck...2 parents with Neuro diseases, and now a Cat too. :wtf:

And I remain a cancer-phobe....

Surround yourself with disease to chase disease away from you. You've found the cure....painful tho it may be.

We were talking and someone came in wearing a Red Sox jacket. Stephen nearly knocked me over to get to the guy. God, what a Sox addict he is.

28. I got a little more than I barganed for when I got my Monster the cat. He occasionally
attacks me. But it is getting less and less as the years go on. And he is such a cuddly critter. I love him to death.

He wasn't what I expected. But the fact he obviously has anger issues and I have PTSD and no children means we are a perfect fit. So we were meant for each other. And that makes me love him all the more. (P.S. nobody in my family will allow him to darken their doorway if I go away or am moving or whatever - they are all scared).

29. Yeah, I wanted a healthy, normal cat, but...
I can deal with her "issues". It's challenging and worrisome, and will probably be expensive, but I'm just in love with the little bugger.

I'm glad you found a good lil Monster. :pals:
