Uh, admins? May I make a suggestion?
Ditch the dopey "ratings," please. Pretty please. With an adult beverage on top?

I can make the decision to look at a post (or not) all on my very own, without any help from any further clutter in the DU interface.

I really CAN do that, even though I'm not exactly the sharpest knife in the ol' drawer.

1. I propose that we create official DU factions.
Any DU member would be able to create a faction. You would be able to join a faction. If you join, then you are visibly identified as a member of that faction.

Then the rating that you see for a particular thread could depend on just the ratings given to that thread by members of the faction that you belong to.

4. Not done until Redstone receives some adult beverage.

Edited to add: hold it! I think Redstone owes the Admins some adult beverage.

6. I'll pay up, and gladly. But the admins have to come here to get the beverages.

3. Wow, Redstone.
Skinner has announced a suspension of the ratings. Either you have considerable clout around here or just really good timing. :D )

10. K&R for, the o.p. said it all for me. Actually, the DU format has been excellent
from the start, and I have been uncharacteristically regressive at every step of the "improvements". There is a quotation somewhere (I'll Google) about progress not necessarily equating with constant change, that some things are at their natural best and no further "progress" is needed. (Somehow the quotation was more concise and clear.)

Also, after the current reprieve, it appears that the wave of the future will be an "UNrecommend" feature. This means that my ONE, pity, mystery Recommender will likely be erradicated by one or another of my numerous flamers!1

11. Couldn't find the quote. These are somewhat similar:

*******QUOTE*******

Georg C. Lichtenberg: I cannot say whether things will get better if we change; what I can say is they must change if they are to get better.

Gloria Steinem: If the shoe doesn't fit, must we change the foot?

Henry Steele Commager: Change does not necessarily assure progress, but progress implacably requires change.

“We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.”
C.S. Lewis quotes

We trained hard...but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form into teams, we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing, and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization. (Petronius Arbiter, 210 BC)

A lot of what appears to be PROGRESS is just so much technological rococo. Bill Grey American Business Executive, Control Data Corp.

All change is not growth as all movement is not forward.
