So I was in Sweden for vacation
two fantastic weeks without internet and TV. Just nature, culture and books. Very relaxing. I was in Stockholm, Gotland, Smaland (where our cabin was), Öland. I took a lot of pics. Once I uploaded them you will see some. Not all, because I took between 700 and 800 pictures. The curse (?) of a digicam.

So, what did I miss in those two weeks?

2. Good morning GoP
I heard about Biden in the radio on our way back. I was sitting in the back of the car, my mom was driving. When they talked more about it she turned up the volume because she knew I am interested in it ... LOL

I need to sort through the pics. I know there are some really good pics in my camera :)

7. Food is good
if you know what to eat. And if you like fish (which I don't). Oh ... and their Kanelbullar :9 (http://scandinavianfood.about.com/od/coffeecakessweetbreads/r/cinnamonrolls.htm)

I wasn't anywhere near Internet access. None at all. It was like a totally different world. Also, we didn't watch TV, so we were away from all the bad news that we are hearing every day. It was truly a vacation from everything.

9. Oh, those look yummy.
Would be great with a cup of coffee.

I LOVE fish! So maybe I too should vacation in Sweden?

During my last vacation I didn't have internet service either, but did have access to a TV, but only watched for the weather.

It's nice to be out of touch with the world for a while.

Gotta go hit the shower.

I couldn't get enough of it. I love cinnamon anyway, so the Kanelbullar were heaven for me :)

It was a real vacation. No news whatsoever. We had German TV but didn't feel like turning it on since it didn't help us with the weather forcast in Sweden

You would really like Sweden. I met a nice American couple (who lives in Luxemburg). We talked a bit and they were going to vote for Obama. (My mom talked to them first and asked them if they were Democrats or Republicans  )

Serious? I've been through there a million times. What a small world.

Your mom must be a stitch! Would have liked to see the expression on the couples face when she posed that question. Glad to hear that they are voting for Obama!

Also glad you had a great vacation.

Last year was the first time that the Photography group made the DU calendar. It was sold over the Café press shop.

41. Keep the rain
it rained all day Saturday when we were driving home from Sweden to Frankfurt. It rained 12 hours out of 14 hours drive. It was a stressful drive.

Did you watch the Olympics? I barely saw anything. The games were while I was in Sweden (with no TV). Can't say I feel like I missed out on something.

35. I visited Visby in 2006
It was for business but I got to stay in the old city. I never had Sweden never mind an island in the middle of the Baltic as high on my list of places to visit if I ever got to Europe but wow did I enjoy my time there and I would love to go back and see more of the country.

And you even got the Gotland Ferry on the pic, wow!!!

Visby is beautiful, so is Gotland itself. Did you get the chance to see the Raukars?

39. I did not
What are the Raukars?

That picture was taken on my morning 'commute' from my hotel to where I was working. :)

I really didn't get to see much other than old city in Visby, walking around my hotel. Mostly shops and old cathedrals and such, still the people and the setting were both great and just whetted my appetite for more.

I remember eating lunch in one building that had been there since the 12th century...I love that sort of thing.

One funny story is one evening the people I was working with invited me out for dinner with them and, I don't know if they normally did this or thought it would suit me better, they suggested a restaurant that was some sort of "Irish Pub" themed chain of the sort you see all over the place in the US (I forget the name). Now I have nothing against going to these sorts of places now and then when I'm home but I looked at these people and said "You've got to be kidding. I'm in a city nearly 1000 years old in a new culture I've never visited before we can do better than that can't we?"

Raukars are .... here is the Wiki entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rauk

We were in Visby for some hours only (2 days on Gotland all together). Our ferry to Oskarsham was leaving at 4pm. The weather turned rainy while we were there. I hope my pics come out OK anyway.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the Swedish countryside and many small
islands in the archipelago and coastline.

I haven't been back there in eleven years and miss it like crazy!

The long summer nights with the sun out all night is something to experience.
Did you ever try the yogurt-type breakfast dish- Fylmjolk?
The closest thing I can find here is liquid kefir- love the stuff!

Thanks so much for the GREAT link to Scandinavian food recipes!

I had the link in Swedish, through Svenska Dagbladen online.

There was no problem in translating them, but some of the ingredients were
hard to find, even with my son working at IKEA here in OC,CA.

Thanks so much for posting this, I'm glad to see you are back.

Hej Då!

43. Hej Hej
I definitely enjoyed every part of it.

Isn't it funny how you can translate the Swedish in writing but when they speak it is like a language from another star? :)

I will post pictures later on, so keep an eye out for it :)

I didn't try the yoghurt .... I have to admit I prefer milk to my musli. But my mom and her bf had it almost every morning and liked it. We don't have that yoghurt in Germany either. I printed the recipe for Kanelbullar already .... I loved those :9
