Oscar Wilde has the *best* grave
It's covered in lipstick kisses...My favorite to visit in Paris, after Piaf and the ashes of Maria Callas.

1. who is that figurehead supposed to be?
and someone must have a lipstick-shaped stamp or template or something...no one is honestly going to put their lips on that, right??

3. No, they're real...hence the sign
People can't resist. It's a pilgrimage type thing. Like me leaving Metro tickets at Serge Gainsbourg's grave. It's what you do. :)

2. "The only thing worse than being talked about, is NOT being talked about."
When my oldest daughter started having crushes on
famous people, they were always either long dead,
or gay.

One day she came home from school and thrillingly
showed me the photo on the back of a book she had
gotten at the book fair.

"Isn't he the HANDSOMEST!!!" she said.

"Dead", I said, "AND gay"

She is still fascinated by him. (Aren't we all?)

4. Indeed...
A fascinating man. And his grave does not disappoint. And how good to be interned in the same place as Chopin, Piaf, Callas, Colette, and Jim Morrison, among others. The most lovely cemetery I've ever visited, albeit very hilly. And the Columbarium is fucking creepy as all get out...But it was worth it to find Callas.

:hi:

5. wow, the actor who portrayed him on "Lillie" looked...
....quite a bit like him! Have you ever seen the series about Lillie Langtry that was made for BBC and shown on Masterpiece Theater in the 70s? We rented it just this year from Netflix. Oscar plays a huge part in the series, and was just delightful. I highly recommend getting the DVD.

6. man, the tomb has already been defaced by that plaque
"an historic monument"?! How shit like that finds its way to plaque form is beyond me.

8. I do hope, after I die, that my grave would be covered by as many kisses so many years...
after my death. Now that is something to wish for! :D

11. He did an American tour.
There are sites associated with him, like old hotels and theaters and such. I keep running into places that claim, "Oscar Wilde stayed here".
