Any Advice on Caring for a Wounded Bird?
Edited on Fri Aug-15-08 06:35 AM by tekisui
I came home to find a few feathers on the floor, my cat acting guilty and a bird hopping around scared.

The bird seems to be okay. No signs of broken skin. It can't fly and I'm hoping it is just due to losing tail and wing feathers.

I have it in a box with nesting material, a perch, bird seed, bread and water.

What else should I do or expect?

TIA.

1. What kind of bird is it? Not all birds can eat seeds. nt

2. I am not sure. It is a small grey bird with a speckled breast.
It has a longer beak than a sparrow, and a little bigger than one.

I gave bread in case, what else could it eat?

3. A longer beak could be an insect eater
Or worm eater...

5. maybe
I would consult a wildlife rescue group for advice. Birds can be very tricky to take care of..they are rather delicate creatures.
They can literaly die of fear.

7. Sounds like a possible Hermit Thrush or baby robin.
It should have professional care. Call the nature center.

8. It looks a lot like the pics of a baby robin,
although it is nearly full grown. The Nature Center opens in an hour.

9. I gave the bird a worm. It gobbled it up, and jumped out of the box,
and perched on an open window. It was able to glide down to the ground and immediately feasted on a big worm. Hope it survives.

10. Good luck!
I rescued one the other night. Bastard cat got it into the main entrance and almost had it into my room until I saw the feathers sticking out of his mouth. He dropped it, he rode the foot, and I managed to pick up the bird. Gave it a lifting toss upwards and it flew off.
