The Series "MadMen" Is Great, But It's Really Cigarette Porn
It's a great show, but man, oh man, do they every smoke a lot. Almost every scene they light up. Aren't the actors a little nervous about doing so much smoking?

1. That was my childhood.
Everybody smoked. Everywhere.

4. My parents didn't smoke, but I remember them putting out ashtrays
for guests when they would throw a dinner party. What a weird message to send; "Hi. We don't smoke, for millions of very good reasons, but please feel free to light up and spread the stink through our nice clean home!"

2. I actually find it a bit distracting
I end up getting aggravated by how much the characters smoke (but the actors are safe--I believe they "smoke" marshmallow or herbs or something)--not because it's not true to life--I vaguely remember those days--but because my noticing them lighting up again for the umpteenth time distracts me from what's going on. It kind of kills my suspension of disbelief and yanks me out of getting into the storyline.

6. that's because you did not grow up in that era...
it must also seem odd to you that men wore hats. and women wore dresses.

and that men treated women like shit.

no, not like 2008. women today have no fucking idea what being treated like shit really is.

women today have no idea what it was like being a woman in 1960. ask your mother if that is reliant or possible.

that is why this is a great show. it captures an essence. not one you would ever want to know or live. but it captures an essence...

7. Is that "essence" called "product placement" by any chance?
I smell the second hand stench of Phillip Morris all over this........

8. nope...
but i was struck by that line delivered by joan in the first ep to peggy as she uncovered the ibm "selectric" typewriter...

"it looks complicated, but the men who designed it made it simple enough for a woman to use..."

and that line came from joan, the most powerful woman on the show.

i'm surprised any women watch this at all. as a guy i get the historical, but if i were a woman? i'd be pissed and boycott..
