How do you perceive Kollyforniya?
"Surfin' USA" was just on the XM '60s channel and it reminded me of the time cousins from Michigan came to visit, and the first thing one of 'em said to me was, "Where's your surfboard?"

That was a long time ago, but I still get the feeling a lot of those misconceptions exist — like we're just one big beach, populated entirely by sun-bronzed teenagers who talk, y'know, like all gnarly 'n' stuff, and everybody has six cars and we're all gay dope smokers with fake boobs.

1. "Kollyforniya" ?? Oh, Oed, don't do that.
That and "the OC" have embarrassed me, a transplant to the east coast. When I tell people where I'm from they either imitate the gov or say, "oh, that's in the OC, isn't it?"

:banghead:

PS I enjoyed your "the Dodgers win it!" thread the other day

PPS I heard the Beach Boys too and promptly changed the channel. Yuck.

5. Laid Back
A few years ago a company I was working for was bought out by a California based company. While they cracked the whip and made us work double hard with less people for the same pay here on the east coast, one of my coworkers went out to the HQ for a week of training and told us how "different" it was..That no one ran around like crazy like we did and didn't seem so time pressured/worried.

10. I always sort of considered it Florida with mountains...

...less rain and colder oceans.

Maybe a little more left leaning, but full of strange characters with a bit of superficiality.

Of course, living in Florida and being a Florida lover, I like all the strangeness that is Florida, so that's not necessarily a bad thing.

12. I think of the wine country. I would love to visit the Napa and Sonoma
Edited on Mon Jun-30-08 05:34 PM by Tuesday Afternoon
Valleys. I think of my aunt and uncle who live in Sacramento. I think of the whole west coast and how I would love to travel from Washington on down to the Baja. Then, I start thinking, why couldn't I have been born rich?

Coming from a large state as I do, I understand that California is not monolithic.

21. Well, I usually don't leave my 45 square miles of foggy liberalism...
...and when I have to, I experience complete culture shock. This state is made up of too many different regions and groups to stereotype it.

In a nutshell: This is the state that sends Darryl Issa and Barbara Lee to the House of Representatives!

23. Before my first trip to the west coast, i thought all of California was
Rich people and eccentrics... I had no idea that there were poor people, or whole economically depressed areas. Then, i turned 18, and took a Greyhound bus from NC to LA to see a friend who had moved there, and had my eyes opened to the realities of the world.
