maybe some were romanticized or blown out of proportion

42. And it's also possible that Plato invented it
like Tolkien created Numenor. I just need evidence before I accept anything whether it be bigfoot, flying saucers or Noah's ark.

Show me evidence of a great sea-faring 10th century BCE civilization on a lost continent and I'll consider it.

Is it supposed to be in the Med or in the Atlantic? I honestly have never closely studied it.

12. When I lived in Cancun some years back
Edited on Sat Jun-28-08 05:55 PM by LanternWaste
When I lived in Cancun some years back, I had the rather delightful opportunity to have dinner with an under-water archaeologist one evening. Also in attendance was the individual I was contracted to write some commercial shots for. We'll call him Brad. Brad's a nice guy-- turned out to be one of my best friends in the word-- but the lines of fantasy and reality get somewhat blurred by him at times (too many nights of playing D&D and not enough nights reading it later turned out)

After dinner while we were relaxing on the patio and having coffee, Brad asks the professor (a very serious man with more degrees than all the people I've ever met put together) bluntly and with ALL seriousness...

"So where do YOU think Atlantis is...?"

Never in my life had I so badly wanted to crawl away and disappear (except for the time in first grade when I pooped my pants)

Edit to add: True story, that.

Uh-oh... this was a serious question?

Does it help that I loooove the song (even the re-make a few years ago-- that one's a guilty pleasure..)?

The archeologist was very diplomatic in his answer, and in so many words, told us there was simply not enough evidence to make a sound determination as to where it's location was/is. Also, his area of experitise was the coast of Merida-- he jokingly said that anything further away than five miles of the coast, he was as lost as we were.

45. Other.
It's been suggested that Plato probably based the idea off handed-down tales of an island culture in the Mediterranean that was destroyed by a volcano about 1400 years before his time. (I don't recall the island's name, but I believe the culture was not related to the Minoans.)

51. Antarctica's one possibility
I guess we'll find out once the ice melts. That's if any of us are still treading water and feeling like diving down for a peek.

I've been to Santorini. It's something to sail into the crater. You see how massive an explosion it was. That ended the Minoans on Crete. There are ruins from the time of the explosion up the mountain from Kalamari Beach called Old Thira.

55. American claims discovery of Atlantis
LIMASSOL, Cyprus (AP) — An American researcher claimed Sunday to have discovered the remains of the legendary lost city of Atlantis on the bottom of the east Mediterranean Sea, but Cyprus' chief government archaeologist was skeptical.

Robert Sarmast said sonar scanning 50 miles southeast of Cyprus revealed man-made walls, one as long as 2 miles, and trenches at a depth of 1,640 yards.

"It is a miracle we found these walls as their location and lengths match exactly the description of the acropolis of Atlantis provided by Plato in his writings," Sarmast said, referring to the ancient Greek philosopher.

The chief government archaeologist of Cyprus, Pavlos Flourentzos, reacted with skepticism, telling The Associated Press: "More proof is necessary."

Sarmast, 38, is an architect by training from Los Angeles. He has devoted the past 2 1/2 years to trying to locate the lost city described by Plato in his dialogues, the Timaeous and the Critias. He spoke to reporters on the "Flying Enterprise," his expeditionary ship, after six days of taking highly sophisticated "side scan" sonars of the seabed.

He said he had chosen the area from data provided by two earlier sonar scans of the east Mediterranean by Russian and French expeditions. Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"Oh no," the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"
