1. Yes. I think we all wear various masks and adapt different acts around different people, situations, etc... But right now for example, my best friend is realizing that she's been putting on the I'm-a-total-badass-and-don't-care-about-anything act for so long that the majority of people around her have completely bought into it and really think that's who she is.
2. One word: heteronormativity. So much of our society is based and dependent on this, and if it goes away, people don't know what to do with themselves.
3. Green Tea with pomegranate! It makes THE best iced tea ever.
4. Probably cucumbers, tomatoes, and carrots with Annie's basalmic vinaigrette and some bread and some cantaloupe juice.

Very true. I pretend to be nice on DU, when I am really mean in real life.

2. why does straight marriage need so much defending?
It has been so successful for thousands of years that jealous haters and their allies in the liberal media are launching an all-out attack on the institution of marriage and on Christmas.

3. what kind of tea do you like?

19. ooh shiny random answers
1. do you think this quote from vonnegut is true "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be. "

I believe that we create our realities. And yes I know it is construed as so much new age garbage by people who don't believe it but I really do believe that our habits and our expectations and our thoughts and feelings ARE our realities. And so, if you make the conscious effort to *be* a certain way, even if it's not what you are today, you will become that way, which makes it important to make the effort to be *better* than we are now.

2. why does straight marriage need so much defending?

I don't think it does. People who are truly happy in their own lives/relationships/marriages shouldn't bother to give a shit how other people find their happiness with another adult.

3. what kind of tea do you like?

Iced, without sweetener.

4. what are you going to have for lunch?

I don't know yet but it's going to be yummy. I'm going out.

5. ask me something..

20. Ok
1. Mother Night was a cool book, and the quote is an interesting counterpoint to the idea that we can divorce our identity from our actions, yet it is also false in that we cannot be whatever we want through pure exercise of will.

2. Marriage is a much more questionable institution than many are willing to admit. The Early Church Fathers viewed it with great suspicion and rightfully so. If it is not defended, the Society of Pope Gregory VII might enforce celibacy.

3. Black tea, strong, no sugar or milk. Iced is good.

4. Beef Curry

24. Four answers and a question.
1. Yes, I agree wholeheartedly with K.V.

2. I would say because there are so many homophobes out there, but that's only part of the reason. The main reason for all this so-called defending of marriage is a political faction's need for distractions, posturing, and fear-mongering to keep people from doing right by society.

3. English or Irish breakfast tea, strong and hot, with milk in it.

4. Ziti.

28. 1) Pretty much, yes.
2) It doesn't need "defending." At least mine doesn't; if Joe and John or Sue and Sally get married, how the HELL could that have the SLIGHTEST effect on my and Mrs R's marriage? Anyone who fels they have to "defend" heterosexual marriage against the "threat" of gay marriage is a fucking moron.

3) I don't drink tea, except the tea I make from opium-poppy seed pods. And if the DEA is monitoring DU, guess what, I was lying just now. I don't actually do that.

4) Chicken-salad sandwich on toasted Portuguese bread. The chicken left over from the rotisserie chicken that Mrs R made last night. It will be good.

5) Not in public. I could get in trouble.

1. do you think this quote from vonnegut is true "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be. "

Cognitively, yes, I think there's a lot of truth in that statement. When your brain starts pretending negative things, that's basically the "interior monologue" of depression and to get out of it, you learn to see life differently.

2. why does straight marriage need so much defending?

doesn't. some people are just hysterical about anything that they are not.

3. what kind of tea do you like?

I had some great Afghani hot tea with honey when I went out to dinner a few weeks ago. I also like blueberry iced tea. But mostly I drink green tea or standard "iced tea" - w/o sugar.

4. what are you going to have for lunch?

had it. a salad from a local co-op. they make a great dressing and always have roasted garlic on the salad bar.

5. ask me something..

Yes, facades take too much energy. Conformity breeds depression.

2. why does straight marriage need so much defending?
I don't get why people are so threatened either. Perhaps see answer to #1. If people were secure within their own lives, they wouldn't have to bother so much with the lives of others.

3. what kind of tea do you like?
I seem to drink a lot of Arizona Diet Peach Iced Tea

4. what are you going to have for lunch?
I had some leftover pasta with sausage and spinach.

1. I think it's true because you spend so much time pretending that you become what you are pretending to be. Does that make sense?

2. I have no clue why. I wish that anyone who wanted to get married could get married. There was an article in our local paper today about a gay couple in my area who flew out to California to get married last week. They won't be recognized as being legally married here in Maine, but they wanted to do it anyway. They also had a commitment ceremony a few years ago. I just think it's crazy that they can't just get married right here. I have friends in NY that have been together almost as long as I've been alive and should be able to be married. How anyone can think of them as a threat to their marriage is beyond me.

3. I like Darjeeling tea, but am mostly a coffee drinker (not lattes).

4. I split a subway turkey and provolone sub with my twins.
