my cousin hanged himself today

he was declared brain dead after he was taken to the hospital and passed shortly after his daughter arrived. He had for many years fought alcohol and drug addiction. He would break into my mother's house and steal from her to feed his drug habit. I have mixed feelings as to his passing because as a kid I looked up to him even though he was just 3 years older than me. I'm more upset for my mother because she's taking it hard. God I hate funerals.

15. it's hard realizing he's gone

even though I hadn't seen him a a year or so. I can hardly think of a time he wasn't around. So much tragedy in just 3 years. Our uncle was struck and killed by a train and our aunt died after a fall. I thank you all for the kind words.

it is so hard to lose someone to suicide. I'm sorry for both you and your mom.

tough thing to live through for us survivors.

My father killed himself when I was 7.

My sister killed herself in 2000.

I still cry when I think too hard about my sister. I loved her so much.

I rode a huge wave of emotions from bewilderment to anger. Then back. I asked myself a million times "what if?" what if she had answered the phone when I called the day she killed herself, would she have come over to spend the day with us? What if I had been more understanding? a better friend? a better sister? Why didn't I see any signs she would do this to herself?

I am sorry for your loss. I am sorry for your whole family.

May I suggest you just spend time with your Mom? Just be there for her. Being alone during this time is the worst.

40. I lost a dear friend that same way.

He was bi-polar, very sick, but sober for 2 or 3 years. He eventually got into an AA group that convinced him he should flush his meds down the toilet, and rely on God instead. He was dead within 6-8 weeks.

Needless to say, I have a bit of an attitude about that. I think AA has done wonderful things for many people, and it is certainly not my intention to diss the program or the many men an women who have been helped by the program, and even changed their lives. My most sincere kudos to them.

But this shit of their being no such thing as a dual diagnosis, or that someone with a mental illness should just rely on God should just eat the mental illness, and double knuckle it instead of being treated for their symptoms, really gripes my ass.

Sorry I went off on a rant. I am really sorry about your loss.
