Proposed license plate bears cross and "I Believe".

COLUMBIA — The cross could soon grace a state specialty license plate.

But if the Legislature endorses the new plate, which would say "I Believe" across the bottom and carry the image of a cross in front of a stained-glass window, the state could end up in court.

The bill received key approval in the House on Wednesday with a 109-0 vote. A change from the Senate version will send it back to that body before it could go to Gov. Mark Sanford's desk.

"People can express their views however they want, on a bumper sticker,

whatever," said Ronald Lindsay, director of the First Amendment Task Force for the Council for Secular Humanism, a New York-based group.

1. I believe that people should let their actions reflect their beliefs, not their license plates.

3. "People can express their views however they want, on a bumper sticker,"
would an "AMEN" be too ironic here? I wouldn't even object to a plate that says "I believe" so long as it didn't have the religious symbolism. What is so fricking hard to understand about the separation of church and state? Why does this keep coming up? And did you ever wonder how much tax money is spent debating the same shit over and over again (not to mention building monuments and stuff and then after they lose the argument having to take them down again). I'm a godless agnostic so I'm sure that influences my opinion but the law seems to be pretty clear about this every single time they try it.

11. We have "In Reason We Trust"
as a counter to the the "In God We Trust" plate.

If someone wants to petition for something to counter the 'I Believe' plate, the law is written to allow it. In fact, if no one takes up a countering plate, this one won't be allowed. It's one of the reasons we don't have a 'choose life' plate...pro-choice groups refuse to sponsor a countering plate.

Get your revenge by getting your plate personalized "ITTIES" (picture the the word on the plate sample -- my pev must be wearing off because I had to think about it before I got it)

9. Oh, those damn specialty plates....
It's so ridiculous to be promoting, defending, or condemning a freakin' license plate when there are REAL issues that Legislature could be addressing.

Either open the floodgates to any and all specialty plates (with the understanding that it does NOT mean the state endorses what's on the plate) or do away with them all. Each state has ONE plate, and you advertise your agenda with as many bumper stickers that you can fit. Problem solved.

12. I have a cool license plate in Michigan
It has the image of the Mackinac Bridge on it. I like the ones that support different causes-state colleges and universities, in particular, but also there is a wildlife one and one for supporting kids' charities.

I think that having one with a cross on it does cross the line.

13. I suppose that's an arguement for the "all" factor of "all or nothing"
If they can have a cross, then another group can have a pentagram, Flying Spaghetti Monster (I'd consider one of those), or whatever.

I'm on the fence, really. I really don't care, other than the time wasted to fight for or against the plates.
