Play a song you've recently discovered
any genre. Just play a song that you recently found and liked or one you were turned on to.

I like this "new" one by Emmy Rossum. I was looking for an old bluegrass type song and saw this. Emmy was in a favorite movie of mine called Songcatcher and was a totally different person.

Here is the song I discovered. Below it is the song I was looking for originally.

Artist: Emmy Rossum
Album: Inside Out
Title: Slow Me Down

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0eGe-VV7I8

Rushing and racing and running in circles,
Moving so fast I'm forgetting my purpose.
Blur of the traffic is sending me spinning,
Getting nowhere.

My head and my heart are colliding - chaotic.
Pace of the world - I just wish I could stop it.
Try to appear like I've got it together - I'm falling apart.

Save me.
Somebody take my hand and lead me.
Slow me down.
Don't let love pass me by,
Just show me how.
Cause I'm ready to fall.
Slow me down.
Don't let me live a lie,
Before my life flies by.
I need you to slow me down.

Sometimes I fear that I might disappear.
In the blur of fast-forward I falter again.
Forgetting to breath,
I need to sleep.
I'm getting nowhere.
All that I've missed I see in the reflection.
Passed me while I wasn't paying attention.
Tired of rushing, racing, and running.
I'm falling apart.

Tell me.
Oh won't you take my hand and lead me.
Slow me down.
Don't let love pass me by.
Just show me how.
Cause I'm ready to fall
Slow me down.
Don't let me live a lie,
Before my life flies by.
I need you to slow me down.
Just show me.
I need you to slow me down.

The noise of the world is getting me caught up.
Chasing the clock and I wish I could stop it.
Just need to breathe,
Somebody please.

Slow me down.

Emmy Rossum singing Fair and Tender Ladies from the movie Songcatcher

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAUcOXSDgR4

Come all ye fair and tender ladies
Take warning how you court your men
They're like a star on a summer's mornin'
They first appear and then they're gone

They'll tell to you some loving story
Then declare they love you well
Then away they'll go and court some other
And leave you here in grief to dwell

I wish I was some little sparrow
and I had wings to fly so high
I'd fly away to my false lover
and when he'd speak I would deny

For love is handsome, love is charming
And love is beauty while it's new
But love grows cold as love grows older
And fades away like mornin' dew

Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me

Ohh watching me, hanging by a string this time.
Ohh easily, the climax of the perfect lie.
Ohh watching me, hanging by a string this time.
Ohh easily, smile worth a hundred lies.

If there's lessons to be learned,
I'd rather get my jamming words in first so,
tell you something that I've found,
that the worlds a better place when it's upside down boy.

If there's lessons to be learned,
I'd rather get my jamming words in first so,
when your playing with desire,
don't come running to my place when it burns like fire boy.

Chorus:
Sweet about me, nothing sweet about me, Yehh
Sweet about me, nothing sweet about me, Yehh
Sweet about me, nothing sweet about me, Yehh
Sweet about me, nothing sweet about me, Yehh

Blue, blue, blue,
waves they crash as time goes by,
so hard to catch.
Too, too smooth,
ain't all that,
why don't you ride on my side of the tracks.

(fading out)
Sweet about me, nothing sweet about me, Yehh
Sweet about me, nothing sweet about me, Yehh
Sweet about me, nothing sweet about me, Yehh

Supermassive Black Hole - Muse

Oh baby dont you know I suffer?
Oh baby can you hear me moan?
You caught me under false pretenses
How long before you let me go?

You set my soul alight
You set my soul alight

(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the 'supermassive'

I thought I was a fool for no-one
Oh baby I'm a fool for you
You're the queen of the superficial
And how long before you tell the truth

You set my soul alight
You set my soul alight

(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the 'supermassive'

Supermassive black hole
Supermassive black hole
Supermassive black hole

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

(You set my soul alight)

11. Awesome voice and band
I'm digging it.

If you don't already have the Songcatcher soundtrack you should get it. Emmylou Harris does a version of Barbara Allen that'll give you goosebumps. There are also many similar songs to boot.

Thanks.

Our Town

Up the street beside the red neon light
That's where I met my baby one hot summer night
He was the tender and I ordered a beer
It's been forty years and I'm still sat here.

And ya know the sun's settin' fast
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts
Go on now and kiss it goodbye
But hold on to your lover 'cause your heart's gonna die
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town
Can't you see the sun's goin' down on our town, on our town
Goodnight.

It's here I had my babies and I had my first kiss
I've walked down Main street in the cold morning mist
Over there is where I bought my first car
It turned over once but then it never went far.

Can't you the sun's settin' fast
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts
Go on now and kiss it goodbye
But hold on to your lover 'cause your heart's gonna die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town
Goodnight.

Sat here on the porch and see the lightnin' bugs fly
I can't see too well, Ifor the tears in my eyes
I'm leave tomorrow but I don't wanna go
I love you, my town, you'll always live in my soul

But I can see the sun's sinkin' fast
And just like you said, nothing good ever lasts
Go on, I gotta kiss you goodbye
But I'll hold to my lover 'cause my heart's gonna to die
Go on now and say goodbye to my town, to my town
Can't ya see the sun's goin' down on my town, on my town
Goodnight, Goodnight

I can see the sun's sinkin' fast
And just like you said, nothing good ever lasts
Go on, I gotta kiss you goodbye
But I'll hold to my lover 'cause my heart's just died
Go on now and say goodbye to my town, to my town
I can see the sun's gone down on my town, on my town
Goodnight, Goodnight

Coldplay- Fix You

When you try your best but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

*heart skips a beat*
Tears stream down your face
when you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I

Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Linkin Park - What I've Done

In this farewell
There’s no blood
There’s no Alibi
‘Cause I’ve Drawn Regret
For the Truth
Of a Thousand Lies

So let Mercy Come
And Wash Away
What I’ve Done

I’ve Faced myself
To Cross out what I’ve Become
Erase Myself
And let Go of What I’ve done

Put to rest
What you Thought of Me
Well I Cleaned this Slate
With the Hands of Uncertainty

For What I’ve Done
I’ll start again
And whatever pain may come
Today this ends
I’m Forgiving What I’ve Done!!!

What I’ve Done
Forgiving What I’ve Done

64. I'll do my best to translate
but keep in mind that I don't speak Galician; I only understand part of the song, and only approximately...

By the way, Borregueto means Ghetto Cry.

She -

I went to see you
with my heart held tight
you would not share your troubles
you were afraid

He -

Let us leave this place of tears,
and walk following the stars
to find new homes

She -

Shining star,
light my path
that I may follow the steps
of my love who is leaving

He -

tree days I have not eaten
traversing the country side
to keep in my lips,
the taste of your kisses

Together -

My companion,
for you, I would give my life,
at the edge of a knife.

20. Here's a great one I just rediscovered
Barenaked Ladies singing their hit "What A Good Boy".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cg_1havjTa0

I had heard it before, but had forgotten it until I heard it on an old episode of Homicide- Life On The Streets a couple weeks back. I had to track down the episode's song list on the internets to remember who it was.

Great song.

When I was born
They looked at me and said
What a good boy
What a smart boy
What a strong boy

And when you were born
They looked at you and said
What a good girl
What a smart girl
What a pretty girl

We've got these chains
Hanging round our necks
People wanna strangle us with them
Before we take our first breath
Afraid of change
Afraid of staying the same
When temptation calls
We just look away

This name is the hairshirt I wear
And this hairshirt is woven from your brown hair
This song is the cross that I bear
Bear with me
Bear with me
Bear with me
Be with me tonight
I know that it isn't right
But be with me tonight

I go to school
I write exams
If I pass if I fail if I drop out
Does anyone give a damn

And if I do
They'll soon forget
'Cause it won't take much for me
To show my life ain't over yet

I wake up scared
I wake up strange
I wake up wondering if anything in my life
Is ever gonna change
I wake up scared
I wake up strange
And everything around me stays the same

It's the hairshirt I wear
And this hairshirt is woven
It's woven from your brown hair
This song is the cross that I bear
Bear with me
Bear with me
Bear with me
Be with me tonight
I know that it isn't right
But be with me tonight

I couldn't tell you
I was wrong
Chickened out grabbed a pen and a paper
Sat down and I wrote this song

I couldn't tell you
That you were right
So instead I looked in the mirror
Watched TV laid awake all night

We've got these chains
Hanging round our necks
People wanna strangle us with them
Before we take our first breath
Afraid of change
Afraid of staying the same
When temptation calls…

This name is the hairshirt I wear

27. Renard Poche has taken the NOLA blogosphere by storm
of course, it doesn't hurt that he's dating one of the bloggers :-) , but he does bring the funk like no one I've heard since Mom used to pull over so we could listen to WAYE "One WAYE" 860 AM back in Bawlmer. He has also been described as "the coolest dude in New Orleans", and thus, by extension, the entire solar system.

Go to his site and download the intro track (it's free), then download the rest of 'em if you are so inclined.

ETA:lyrics

And if you see me losing ground
Don’t be afraid to lie
I know the pain inside my heart can’t break the fear inside of yours
And if you see me losing faith
In what it means to die
Don’t let me leave before I know what lies behind the stained glass doors

Save sorrow for the souls in doubt
Bleed every care out

Chorus:
Will you carry me down the aisle that final day
With your tears and cold hands shaking from the weight
When you lower me down beneath that sky of gray
Let the rain fall down and wash away your pain

For every word we never spoke
We have a tear to cry
For every silence like a wall between a better you and I
So if you see me losing sight
Of all the death in life
You’ll find the peace in every time I failed to see the death in mine

Let all the fear inside you drown
Tear out the blade and lay it down
Save sorrow for the souls in doubt
Bleed every care out

(Chorus)

Oh, the blood is rushing out
Oh, I’m better off without
Oh, the walls are closing in
Oh, sing for me again

(Chorus)
(Rain down, oh rain down, no care for the flood)

Will you carry me down the aisle that final day
With your tears and cold hands shaking from the weight
When you lower me down beneath that sky of gray
Let the rain fall down and wash away your pain

For every word we never spoke
We have a tear to cry
For every silence like a wall between a better you and I
So if you see me losing sight
Of all the death in life
You’ll find the peace in every time I failed to see the death in mine

Let all the fear inside you drown
Tear out the blade and lay it down
Save sorrow for the souls in doubt
Bleed every care out

Oh, the blood is rushing out
Oh, I’m better off without
Oh, the walls are closing in
Oh, sing for me again

(Rain down, oh rain down, no care for the flood)

31. Handlebars - Flobots
I can't say I recently discovered it, because my favorite Denver radio station has been playing it for over 6 months now - but this song is blowing up all across the country, and for good reason - it's DAMNED good!

So, I'm glad to promote it as many times as I can!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuK2A1ZqoWs

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handlebars
No handlebars

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handlebars
No handlebars

Look at me, look at me
hands in the air like it's good to be
ALIVE
and I'm a famous rapper
even when the paths're all crookedy
I can show you how to do-si-do
I can show you how to scratch a record
I can take apart the remote control
And I can almost put it back together
I can tie a knot in a cherry stem
I can tell you about Leif Ericson
I know all the words to "De Colores"
And "I'm Proud to be an American"
Me and my friend saw a platypus
Me and my friend made a comic book
And guess how long it took
I can do anything that I want cuz, look:

I can keep rhythm with no metronome
No metronome
No metronome

I can see your face on the telephone
On the telephone
On the telephone

Look at me
Look at me
Just called to say that it's good to be
ALIVE
In such a small world
All curled up with a book to read
I can make money open up a thrift store
I can make a living off a magazine
I can design an engine sixty four
Miles to a gallon of gasoline
I can make new antibiotics
I can make computers survive aquatic conditions
I know how to run a business
And I can make you wanna buy a product
Movers shakers and producers
Me and my friends understand the future
I see the strings that control the systems
I can do anything with no assistance
I can lead a nation with a microphone
With a microphone
With a microphone
I can split the atoms of a molecule
Of a molecule
Of a molecule

Look at me
Look at me
Driving and I won't stop
And it feels so good to be
Alive and on top
My reach is global
My tower secure
My cause is noble
My power is pure
I can hand out a million vaccinations
Or let'em all die in exasperation
Have'em all grilled leavin lacerations
Have'em all killed by assassination
I can make anybody go to prison
Just because I don't like'em and
I can do anything with no permission
I have it all under my command
I can guide a missile by satellite
By satellite
By satellite
and I can hit a target through a telescope
Through a telescope
Through a telescope
and I can end the planet in a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handle bars
No handlebars

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handlebars
No handlebars

All the Best - John Prine

I wish you love - and happiness
I guess I wish - you all the best
I wish you don't - do likle I do
And never fall in love with someone like you
Cause if you feel - just like I did
You'd probably walk around the block like a little kid
But kids don't know - they can only guess
How hard it is - to wish you happiness

I guess that love - is like a Christmas card
You decorate a tree - throw it in the yard
It decays and dies - and the snowmen melt
Well, I once knew love I knew how love felt
Yeah I knew love - love knew me
And when I walked - love walked with me
And I got no hate - and I got no pride
Well, I got so much love that I cannot hide
Yeah, I got so much love that I cannot hide

Say you drive a Chevy - Say you drive a Ford
Say you drive around the town 'till you just get bored
Then you change you mind - for something else to do
And you heart gets bored with your mind and it changes you
Well it's a doggone shame - and it's an awful mess
I wish you love - I wish you happiness
I wish you love - I wish you happiness
I guess I wish - you all the best

Intro
Well everybody would you focus your mind
Search for the truth and you will find
Good spirit and strength from within
That fights against all sin

Jai Om Numah Shivaya

I shall walk across the land that has been chosen
and I shall climb the mountain so high,
I shall go across the sea and across the ocean
and sing with the bird in the sky,
Its only Jah up above man who leads the way
under whose shadow I abide,
Me say you're running and you're running and you're running away
but from yourself you know you can¹t hide

Jai Om Numah Shivaya

Well everybody would rise and focus your mind
Search for the truth and learn to be kind
Everybody would you fight against the evil you find
Tell you people about the 'Religion of your Mind¹

Jai Om Numah Shivaya

Verse 2
He who dwells in the secret place of the most high
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty I
Everyday I Rise...Rise up above their lies
But still them want fight I and I
Everyday I Rise ...Rise with my spirits well high
Ca you know Jah Jah guide I and I

40. Not a recent discovery, but - The Flaming Lips, ASSASSINATION OF THE SUN
As you walked away
A strand of hair came undone
And was reflected in the Sun
And everything was orange

As you disappeared
The shadow of Death came undone
And was reflected in the Sun
And everything was orange

They have begun to celebrate
The tidal wave they think is great
The ever-beating heart that it wasn't

They have begun
They have begun
They have begun
To assassinate the Sun

As you died in the night
A million stars formed into one
And became another sun
And everything was orange

And now this horrible machine
Churns out pain instead of love
And looks just like the Sun
And everything was orange

They have begun
They have begun
They have begun
To assassinate the Sun

I don't know if we'll make it home
All we can do for now is hope

I don't know if we'll make it home
Water all around could swell and wash us all away, away!
And if we never set our feet on land again
This will be one lesson I will not forget

And if you drown
You won't even make a sound
You'll just swallow water down
At the bottom, you'll find out
That it's quiet when you drown

I'm losing track of all the days
Lost inside a lifeboat, drifting out with all the waves, the waves!
And some will find their way by looking towards the sky
And some will leave their fate up to these ocean tides

And if you drown
You won't even make a sound
You'll just swallow water down
At the bottom, you'll find out
That it's quiet when you drown

And when you drown
You'll never even make a sound
And when you drown
You're gonna swallow water down

The water gets so heavy
The water gets so heavy
The water gets so heavy

The water's heavy when you drown
You won't even make a sound
You'll just swallow water down
At the bottom, you'll find out
That it's quiet when you drown

You'll never even make a sound
You'll just swallow water down
At the bottom, you'll find out
That it's quiet when you drown

Riding the city bus to and from school/work was the highlight of my days. You get plenty of those "in the moment" times when you turn off the auto-pilot.

Good one.

Autopilot Off

I reach beneath the skin of the street with each step
Walkin' closer to my final destination of death
When I'm layin' to rest, I'm only savin' my breath
The Northwest fills the lungs, heals the pain in my chest

Take six quarters out of the pocket
Drop it in the box
Hop the 48, off to pay homage
It stops often, I jot my observations, watchin'
Citizens walkin' off of the Joe Metropolitan
Proletariats and wayward sons
With old Filipino men speakin' in they native tongue
And the day is just begun
Greeted by the scent of a bum
Smelling something like beer, barf, and dung
A brother in repose in the back all alone
Marinatin' in a pair of half-broken headphones
Muddled in rhymes
Same time begin to pen mine
Appreciating God's design
Rewind sister
Reminds me of a smile in the back of my memory
Wonder if I'll see her again
Will she remember me?
"I'm not tryin' to holler, I swear. I'm just weary of the way we hop a ride
and just sit there and stare."
Prepare for my nine o' clock work meeting
A couple pale folks slide right by with no greeting
But the people with my phenotype follow with a head-nod up
Because we acknowledge that the shit's fucked up

North of Martin Luther King: a straight warzone
Detours through the concrete, cranes, and bulldozers
No, the Hill is not over still
Every block got a coffee shop; it's overkill
Focus, know the deal
Dope to see Kalil back, the medicine is good again
The feeling: illegal, and coming back to your hood again
It's priceless, I write this, our lives are in crisis
Most talk, but don't walk, the path of the righteous
Despite this..
I measure each step, walkin' closer to my final destination of death
When I'm layin' to rest, I'm only savin' my breath
The Northwest fills my lungs, heals the pain in my chest
Clutch the moment, a transfer in my hand
Still listening
Lookin' out the window to the gold and the gray
And the sun might be shinin' but it's colder than it seems
'Cuz the weather's dialectical: there's no in-between

In walks an old soul
A First Nation native, cat's chiseled like a totem pole
No words, as he stands and looks over us
He gets off and says, "Have a good day, you foreigners."
I, crack a smile one time for the acknowledgement
Northbound, now we start to pick up more college kids
They try to study on the ride
To make up for the fact that they probably kicked it hard last night
And I ponder if it's time to save up and get a car
And pay for the gas that we're takin' from the war
I'd miss all the colorful faces, the places, and spaces I've embraced with
the faith that I can rest and raise kids here even with these cats set
trippin'
Bringin' '95 back again, same old conditions
From Reagan, to Bush, to Clinton, to the Bush the 2nd
No matter the neighborhood in the city you're reppin'
It's gettin' serious y'all
You can even hear the rebel call
Gettin' off, leavin' hella pieces on the walls
Seen it all, sittin' sideways with my townmates
Only place left where majority is brown-faced

Now we headed downtown to trade our labor for cash
I thank the navigator once and walk fast
I walk past the next round of cats to jump on it
Locked in deep thought, we ride around in silence
And cross Resolve Bridge
I watch each step, walkin' closer to my final destination of death
When I'm layin' to rest, I'm only savin' my breath
The Northwest fills the lungs, heals the pain in my chest
I remain blessed, steppin' on rain with each step
Eyes heavy from the lack of the cousin of death
When I'm layin' to rest, I'm only savin' my breath
The Northwest fills the lungs y'all, you know the rest..

59. Kind of.
The other stuff on the CD is an odd mish mash of styles (the song "Let's Roll" on their Myspace page is awesome, and uses Windows Narrator to great effect...and yes, it's named after the famous quote from 9/11, and features my favorite line of the year, "We are all Mohammads now!"). All I know is I'm digging it. :)

Larry made his nest high up in the autumn branches
Built from nothing but high hopes and thin air
He collected up some baby blasted mothers who took their chances
And for a while they lived quite happily up there

He came from New York city man, but he couldn't take the pace
He thought it was like dog eat dog world
Then he went to San Francisco, spent a year in outer space
With a sweet little San Fransiscan girl.

I can hear my mother wailing and a whole lot of scraping of chairs

I don't know what it is but there's definately something going on upstairs

(I want you to dig)

(I want you to dig)

(I want you to dig)
Meanwhile Larry made up names for the ladies
Like miss Boo and miss Quick
He stockpiled weapons and took potshots in the air
He feasted on their lovely bodies like a lunatic
And wrapped himself up in their soft yellow hair

I can hear chants and incantations and some guy is mentioning me in his prayers.
Well, I don't know what it is but there's definately something going on upstairs

(I want you to dig)

(I want you to dig)

(I want you to dig)
Well New York City man, San Francisco, LA, I don't know
But Larry grew increasingly neurotic and obscene
I mean he, he never asked to be raised from the tomb
I mean no one ever actually asked him to forsake his dreams
He ended up like so many of them do, back on the streets of New York City
In a soup queue, a dopefiend, a slave, then prison, then the madhouse, then the grave
Ah poor Larry.

But what do we really know of the dead And who actually cares?

Well, I don't know what it is but there's definiately something going on upstairs.

(I want you to dig)

(two guys ate pig)

(I want you to dig)

One day, we'll be together
We'll never be apart,
One heart, one mind yeah
One day we'll be together
Remember this old world is yours and mine (yeah)

See that man with a pen and gun ?
Says its over for everyone (oh no)
No I don't believe it's true
But, I guess its up to me and you
