How hard is it to teach yourself Spanish?
I would like to learn Spanish because of its wide usage (North America, Europe, South America) and its relative ease. I took French for most of elementary school, and took Spanish in high school. Though the instruction wasn't very good, I still have a pretty good foundation in the rules of Romance languages. So if I wanted to become an adequate student of the Spanish language, about how hard would it be?

3. If you are already fluent in French...
not hard. French is IMO harder to learn.

8. I agree. I started studying Spanish after studying French for like 7 years.
I blew off Spanish more than any class in college (when the syllabus said things like "introduction to verb conjugations", I'd find a good frisbee game on the quad). My Spanish is still passable.

7. My sisters are both learning Spanish for professional use
i.e., they're serious about learning it well. They both take classes but in addition to the classes they both watch a lot of Spanish language TV. They swear by it stating that it makes learning fun plus gives them a better grasp on idioms and so forth. I also used to date a Swedish guy and he learned English from watching American TV, never formally studied it at all, and his command of English wasn't perfect (he'd sometimes use a wrong form of a verb or pronoun) but really very good. Based on those 3 personal stories, I'd say that it's probably really helpful if you're serious about thoroughly learning a foreign language.
