Women Arrested After Allowing 2-Year-Old To Smoke
Story Updated: May 13, 2008

Two women were arrested at a Greenfield Ponderosa restaurant after allowing a 2-year-old to smoke.

According to police:

They boy's 26-year-old mother and 39-year-old aunt were eating at the restaurant last week, when they held a cigarette up to the boy's mouth and attempted to light it.

The aunt told police that the boy often says "smoke, smoke" and sometimes takes cigarettes out of the pack and puts them in his mouth.

The aunt said the mother keeps a rolled up dollar bill in the bedroom, which the child plays with.

Anytime the boy has the dollar bill he hold it up to his nose and says, "fix, fix" over and over again.

1. The story is that mom was away from table
Kid at table with aunt. Cigarettes left on table. Kid takes one and puts in mouth. Aunt had a lighter and lit the lighter (not near the kid or smoke) in jest. People freaked and called cops.

This is so freaking overblown. I live in Milwaukee and they are plastering this all over the news as though it's the fucking cult in TX.

Should smokes be kept out of kid's reach at all times? Yes. But... jeebus, this is such a non-story.

Mom and aunt were ticketed with "giving tobacco to a minor".

2. I would be concerned that the child might have taken a bite out of it.
Because of the toxicity. They should have been more careful, but you're right. They're making a federal case out of this.

3. What's your source on that?
Those reporting it with shock and alarm need to be edified.

And then shaken.
