If you're fat and/or unemployed, stay OUT of GD, please!!!
The hate fests against the unemployed and/or obese are really amazing.

I'm hiding.

This is a thread I started as a rant against Rosemary's thread whining about all those people who can't find jobs, who must be lazy and not looking. Rosemary just can't understand it. She is disabled and not working, BTW.

My rant ended up expressing the idea that our worth is not defined by whether we have a paying job or not:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=245x68356

And the people who think all fat people are lazy and eating too much are stunning.

1. Well,
As someone who is highly educated, raised a wonderful child, and who is now unwillingly disabled and collecting disability, I find that really insensitive and heartbreaking.

And believe me, it's not easy to get a disability determination under the bush regime.

I'm not obese anymore, but that's because I've lost about 60 pounds so far due to disability. It's so easy for others to judge when they haven't been there.

And I've been caught in the unemployment trap too. When 1,000 people get laid off from a company that goes belly up, and hundreds of us are competing for the same jobs, the odds are not good for even getting an interview.

2. Well, I'm fat
And when I'm not working, I'm a kinda-messy procrasinating couch potato.

I'm eating better than I was 2 months ago, but that's about it.

However, I'm walking to work now, and when I'm there I work very hard at being very productive, for which I'm paid pretty darn well, considering.

And neither of those 'negative' bothers me enough to change. Flvegan had an epitome or something, so good for him. Me, I'm still waiting.

3. Today we had a thread eventually locked, about obesity.
It was locked after one of the posters stated that she was quite depressed over the judgmental attitudes expressed against fat people. She has a metabolic problem, low thyroid, which I also have, and which is quite common.

I keep working on myself to have compassion for people.

6. That is really sad.

We,silly hairless monkeys,are so afraid of the unknown,the different peoples,the "others"that we

can be extremely cruel toward each other.Sometimes I'm disgusted to be human, but other times I see

genuine generosity and really good peoples who help each others. That helps a lot.

4. WHAT!?!
"people who can't find jobs, who must be lazy and not looking"?

WTF?

"she just couldn't understand why people could be unemployed for years"

"She thought they were lazy"

"utter lack of compassion is amazing." You can say that again my friend.

What...OMG! I've read the whole post and I'm...Yes I'm crying right now.

Everything you say is wonderful in that post.I don't know who's Rosemary but

I believe she doesn't belong here on DU.For the last 5 years I've been on welfare

(Canadian version) because of serious health problems. So according to Rosemary

I should STF and die in a ditch ?

Thanks for this eye opening post Perragrande.

10. That's rosemary2205
I looked her up. She lives in Morrow, GA and said she is disabled. She really did start a thread wondering why people can't get jobs. She also suggested that we start businesses, if nobody will hire us. Several people answered that statement saying they had started their own businesses that had failed because nobody is buying anything. She had a real problem understanding how and why the economy is bad.

This thread was started a couple of weeks ago, but I could not find it.

Thank you, Jeff! You made my day!

7. Oops! Double-dissed
Fat and unemployed. The latter condition shouldn't last much longer, thank the gods. I've finally cleared up the legal problems with my nursing license, and should be gainfully employed soon.

I usually stay away from those sort of threads anyway. The amount of intolerance I sometimes see coming from self-proclaimed progressives saddens me. I once knew a doctor like that: she'd loudly lecture every overweight patient she met about how easy it was to stay slim with "just a little self control". When she hit menopause and gained fifty pounds, I wanted to throw a party.

8. LOL
I would go to that party. I've got some endocrine issues myself and that's all I heard for 10 years- it's your own fault. I guess this 'lack of self control' is genetic based on the history of women on my dad's side.

9. I finally wrote to Skinner over it
Unfortunately, to suggest that those of us who are less than svelte should withhold financial support from the site until this shit stops, permanently, will get nothing but locked.

Perragrande, thanks for fighting the good fight.

to take heed of judgmental assholes who think you are worthless if you don't have a paying job. Rosemary2205, however, is disabled, so her own rules don't apply to her.

17. Alright, since you chimed in
First off, I have no idea who this Rosemary2205 person is, nor could I give a fuck.

It's safe to say that my comment is assuming that a person is looking for a job. So my comment about looking for work, while spending all day on DU still stands. Excuse me if I don't know the situation of every single DUer.

23. I stopped looking.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results (Or maybe it's just not learning from your mistakes).

I quit looking because I was expecting to get a job, and nobody would hire me. So I stopped tormenting myself.

Go over to the Astrology Group and check out my rant/thread:

15. Well I know I am fat because I happen to actually be a lazy slob who eats badly.
However, I know darn well that not everyone is like me. My *mumbles* is overweight due to the meds they have her on for her diabeties. She used to be really thin but unfortunately got sick. Anyone who judges her gets the sharp side of my tongue and no mistake.

18. The idea that our worth is not defined by whether we have a paying job or not
I think, at a basic level, that statement is a huge aspect of the American political debate. I think many Americans fundamentally believe the opposite. They believe that your worth and your intelligence is measured by how much money you make and your display of the trappings of wealth. Those who are poor, by this reasoning, are inferior.

20. Still one would think the people on a "progressive" board
would not be such judgmental assholes. It all comes down to the RW haranguing about "welfare queens" who drive Cadillacs and how the poor in America can't be poor because they're so fat.
Sadly even our own seem to buy into this shit.

19. I pay my own way
I don't ask or expect anything from anybody. I'm sometimes happily surprised but never disappointed with this approach.

I am not going to let somebody else dictate what I should be or do based on their priorities and expectations. Fuck 'em This is my life and it is my choice how to live it. My priorities and my definition of success are my own.

Nor am I going to allow someone else to define my value and worth. They don't know my goals, where I come from, what I am fully capable of or where I am going. Their judgment has only the value I permit it to have.

Any effort to judge is a reflection of the one making the assesment more than the one being judged INHO. As they say everybody needs somebody to look down on.

I did not see the thread you reference in GD. Just as well. I likely would have to add folks to my ignore list and hide the thread. I refuse to host judgmental crap.
