Who walks their cat?
We were coming in a bit a go, and out the front door of the building comes this hick looking dude in a cowboy hat walking a cat on a leash. He was trying to coax her out the front door, but she wasn't having it.
Who does that??!! Is this normal behavior for people to walk their cat on a leash?

1. Some cats tolerate it.
I remember some people in the pets forum mentioning they walk their cats.
Hey, I have a cat that fetches...

9. Actually, my daughter does that.
My wife bought leashes for them all, and they all actually seem to tolerate that. albeit tentatively.

I guess it is the fresh air.

2. I used to take my cats out for walks sans leashes
The real story is that in the summer, the cats liked to sit out in the backyard. If they saw me walk through the yard and out into the alleyway behind the house, they would start to follow me down the alley and around the corner. Basically I would walk around the block with the two cats following me. We were quite a sight.

10. Had one who did that...
Misha considered it part of his JOB to escort me whenever I went somewhere on foot.

I lived within walking distance of one of my clients (was working as a Personal Care Attendant). Didn't realize Misha was outside when I started off for my shift...then two blocks down the street "Mrraah?"
"Misha, GO HOME! I'm going to work!"
Try telling a cat anything. :eyes:

Misha escorted me to my client's apartment building...then waited outside, under a car until my two-hour shift was over. He then escorted me home, chewing me out all the way for going so far off the property.

He'd help take out the garbage, too. I'd yell "Trash patrol!" and I'd have a large black felinoid escort out to the garbage can.
I do miss that cat...

4. My sister does.
When her cat was a kitten it went nuts when she took the dogs for a walk. She was afraid the little thing was going to hurt himself so she got him a harness and took him with them. He has gone on walks with the dogs ever since. When he was still a kitten when he got tired he would take turns riding on the Great Pyrenees or the German Shepherd's back. They caused a few near accidents until the neighbors got used to them.

5. One of mine tolerates a leash
I can't "walk" him, but he does get to venture out into the yard on the leash every once in a while. It's a treat for him and he loves it...otherwise he's a strictly indoor-only cat.

I haven't tried it on the other 2. One is too afraid (of EVERYTHING) and the other is too young.

7. My first cat used to love it. The others act as if I'm trying to torture them, so
I quit. I don't think it's very common.

11. My friend's brother does.
He taught the cat from kittenhood. But my friend's cat would not stand for something like that.

12. I think you have to train a cat from birth to do it. I've tried. No can do.

13. I do, without a leash. We just go a little ways down the driveway and back.

She's the first cat I ever had that would do that!

14. I take my cat out for "walks" on a leash because she's deaf and has to stay indoors.

She sort of creeps around and rolls on the lawn! :) It makes her happy!

17. I saw a guy in my neighborhood just yesterday
Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 02:16 PM by Coyote_Bandit
who was walking two cats - each on a separate leash. At the time I passed by I noticed one of the cats had managed to get the leash hopelessly tangled in another neighbors shrubbery. Pretty shrubbery filled with early spring color. I would have been pissed off. I suspect the brighter end of that leash was hiding in the shrub.

18. IF the cat will let you
some will but it sounds like that guy was just traumatizing his poor cat :( Maybe he'll learn not to try that, I hope.

19. We travel with our cat
We leave the carrier with the door open on the back seat so she can hide in there if she wants, but most of the time she sits on the front seat. When we stop, I walk her on a leash.

20. I once had a cat that would do that.
I had a little red fabric harness and leash I had bought for my other cat. The other cat didn't like it, so I tried it on the new cat. I lived in a high-rise apartment at the time, and he used to enjoy having me take him downstairs to get a little fresh air. The looks I would get were fun to watch. :)
