Is there anything bad about San Diego, CA?
Worlds greatest beers (Stone, Alpine, Port, Ballast Point and AleSmith all hail from SD.)

Perfect weather (usually 70 F)

Beautiful people (both men and women)

Housing is cheaper than LA

Beaches...gorgeous beaches all over the place

La Jolla. Need I say more?

Democrat in all the right places, Republican in tax codes.

Downtown is a blast.

What's not to like?

All depends on where Mr. DTBK can find a job (as usual). Sigh.

3. If you can manage SD, it might almost be better than SF
Ask yourself: do you like warm weather or do you like cold weather every so often?

SD has no cold weather. SF has nothing but cold weather (but that's by CA standards. We consider anything under 60 as cold)

7. SF has nothing on you then
It gets cold by our standards, but even folks from Seattle will say we're wimps.

Think Chicago during the Summer, and that's as cold as it gets.

Tav, we have COOL weather here, with the occasional cold enough temps in the wee hours of the morning when most of us are sleeping.

San Diego isn't bad. I'd live there if I had to move.

11. I was born and raised in San Jose, CA
I've lived in Lake Tahoe, Oregon and Thailand at different points in my life - but true cold weather has never been a daily factor, even in Tahoe. When you live in the Lake basin, it gets cold, but not really cold.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm spoiled, weather-wise.

8. I'll never go back there
even though it was a nice town.

I made a left on a yellow light that turned red as the camera caught me. I really wasn't running a red light, I just turned on it after the oncoming traffic had passed. When I got back home I had a $260 ticket. A little excessive, don't ya think?

I was pissed.

14. We have them everywhere too
SF, DC, Houston, LA...i could run out of space if I listed who had them.

The biggest problem is that they are an easy temptation for a city because they pay for themselves in 1 year.

There was one guy they showed on Oddball who took a shotgun to several - and it was all caught on video. That's an American hero there in my opinion

35. What club's he with?
Name doesn't ring a bell.

A lot of people like Leitner, for reasons that escape me. He's a huge homer — calls 'em "my Padres" when they're ahead and "your Padres" when they're behind. He never met a second of silence that he didn't hate, but the worst thing is he calls a game like he's reading copy for a furniture store commercial and getting excited over a $199 dining-room set.

I guess I sort of applaud their diversity for having a female radio announcer, but I've heard her, and she's horrible.

17. While housing is cheaper than LA, it's still hideously expensive.
Edited on Thu Mar-13-08 06:14 PM by GOPisEvil
I was thinking about places to which I would relocate, and San Diego would make the cut, but I could NEVER buy a home there. Well, maybe SOMEDAY, but not anytime soon.

So, the weather isn't quite as perfect here and there are no beaches, but Austin works for me. I paid less than $100k for my house 4 years ago. You can't buy an outhouse in SD for that.

18. Thing about buying a home in California is...
You rent for a long time. You deal with rentals, which aren't so bad in CA since there is a ton of competition. Sure, they're expensive, but its way cheaper than buying. Then, the opportunity presents itself - you take it, and now you are a homeowner here. It's an investment into a lifestyle, however, because you will never be afloat unless you stay there for life.

It's worth it, but you have to be in it for the long haul.

19. Well, if I were still a renter, it wouldn't bother me.
Honestly, if I were to get the job I want, my salary would be suffient to live faily well as a renter. I've just gotten used to the benefits of home ownership, and it would hard to step back.

21. Too many people
Housing prices are through the roof.
Traffic.
Urban and suburban sprawl.
The climate is great if you can live close to the ocean. my sis is about 15 miles inland where it's a lot hotter.
Gangs.
Fires and earthquakes.

But it's a fantastic place to visit.

24. In response
-Housing prices here, even though very high, are lower than LA or the Bay Area

-Traffic is not as bad here as it is in LA (there is no 405-101 or Orange Crush here)

-The suburbia here is boring, but the urban areas are still developing, and pretty nicely actually. There's plans of extending the trolley to University City.

-It's better to be hot than still digging out of the snow.

-Gang activity here is nowhere near as bad as LA.

-Fires here have been terrible the past ten years, though SD does not really have earthquakes like LA or the Bay Area does.

The major faults spare the San Diego area.

If one comes from Podunk Hollow, sure SD seems to have problems, but compared to where most people live in the US, it really does not.

I wasn't offended at all, just stating facts.

Lots of the sprinklers in La Jolla/University City are fed reused water. The water situation here is nothing like in the southeast.

25. There's lots of military folks around, but since it''s a huge urban area
In SD there are plenty of air and naval shows, but those actually cool. If you think SD is full of jackasses, just go to Oceanside or Fallbrook, now those are military towns full of pricks.

the fourth being, obviously, the ocean.

Also, the notorious "June gloom" in which the marine layer comes onshore for much of the month, producing a grayness similar to that of SF's Sunset and Richmond districts.

30.  left in '85, no regrets
Born in San Diego. Grew up there. It used to be a nice place.
(I feel about the Beach Boys the way Colorado-ans feel about John Denver.)
Way too many people in too small a space, housing prices are INSANE.

Food for thought: most of the water that southern California uses comes out of a couple of artificial lakes fed by the Colorado river. The water level in those lakes is dropping. Fast. When they're dry, the local aquifers will support a few hundred thousand out of the tens of millions that now live there. When that happens -- and it's just a matter of when -- it will be a very, very bad place to be living.

J.

34. San Diego sucks
I've been there a few times and thought it was totally lame. It's like all of the bad stuff about LA (disgusting suburban chain store sprawl, little parking, etc.) without any of the good stuff (good experimental music, art, cinema). I'm not defending LA - LA sucks. I know. San Diego actually sucks more. I'm really pissed that my girlfriend is moving there this summer. God, that is not a place that I want to visit.

And La Jolla? La Jolla is the worst of the worst.

LA is America's toilet. San Diego is the bidet.

Probably not.

LA can be bad, but it is hardly America's toilet. That's Florida :P

and it needs to have a special medicated cream rubbed on it that should sooth the burning and cure the infection.

I'm sure the zoo is nice, and parks are always nice, beaches.... eh, beaches are ok, but I don't really like crowds. I haven't been to La Jolla Cove, but I have been to horrible strip malls and awful roads and sprawl sprawl sprawl.
