Gen X'ers: Can we claim Barack Obama?
Birthdate: August 4, 1961.

Used the term "give it up for ____ " in his speech this evening.

I'll bet he played Pong as a teenager.

What do you think?

;)

5. This is what I don't understand about the Baby Boomers...
what I've read is that the generation lasts from 1945 to 1964. That's a good 19 years.

Generation X? Everything I've read is 1965 to 1977 to 1980. As little as 12 to as much as 15 years.

Generation Y? I believe that's slated from 1980 to 2000 (?) A good 20 years.

I'm sorry... but really - how well are we measuring these cohorts? What's up with that??? We Gen X'ers were robbed! :P

7. I think that categorizing people in distinct generations
is stupid. But that's just me...

10. Oh for fuck's sake.
I suppose we shouldn't read the horoscope either because it unfairly "classifies" people by birthdate!

I hope we find better things to become indignant about.

I read a post that says that somehow I'm committing a social foul by bringing up this innocuous topic. I am going to react!

15. Oooh. The liberal claws are exposed!
I suppose throwing a wet blanket over what was meant to be a fun little discussion on a topic I enjoy is what you do best.

So... how should we proceed with this inane flame war?

And before anyone jumps on me with the obligatory, "racist much?" response, I wouldn't care if he was green with polka dots.

23. He's about 5 years older than me. I'd consider that the same generation.
Not saying that changes my opinion of him as a candidate one way or another.

And he very well could have had Pong. He would have been in college by the time the Atari 2600 came out.

30. Good Answer --
I thought a generation was considered to span 15 years. I thought that number was considered to the standard age when people began to start another generation. Remember, it has only been since the industrial age that we (as a species) have prolonged the maturing process.

35. Not really - 61 was on the downward slope of the baby boom, past the 2nd mu
aka standard deviation.

That makes him a part of the baby bust, hence, Gen X

But he still shouldn't marginalize and insult Baby Boomers (and Tom Hayden).

37. True, but you understand we X'ers have been living in your shadow
And at the same time, we Gen X'ers are your only real "children." We were the last, and only generation to be taught with the progressive principles you guys put in place. So its a love/hate thing.

Every band wants to be the next Beatles, no one wants to be the next Oasis.

38. Well, I'm only slightly older than Obama
And I feel that the only real Boomer president has been Clinton (Bush is in a time warp) and he dropped the ball on a few things like NAFTA. I don't want my day to be over before it's begun!!!!
