Just finished my sleep study.
Edited on Fri Dec-28-07 05:47 PM by Jimbo S
The subject discussed here last year.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x5922440

Today I was diagnosed with sleep apnea.

But I just have to say what a fascinating experience it was being tested, having every sleeping moment recorded and analyzed. I didn't realize how much I snored, or the fact I woke up 22 times last night (I would have guessed 3 or 4). Money well spent.

The solution now is either CPAP machine, mouth piece, or surgery. I'm going to go with the mouth piece, first.

I've been battling daytime fatigue for 30 years, and now I may have pinpointed the cause.

2. Good decisioin. Try the mouthpiece. 20 times isn't that bad.
I woke 90 times. I have a CPAP set on 14. I've heard the surgery hurts (from several people) for a long time afterwards. If the mouthpiece doesn't work, go with the CPAP.

3. glad they found the problem
my mom recently had one.....they put her up at the Holiday Inn and tested her there....turns out meds were her problem, but after going off of them she is still waking up at 3 am every morning, though falling asleep much earlier

good luck with the mouth piece! :hi:

4. I have mild sleep apnea...
and I CPAP..its not bad. I know they start you with the mouthpiece but all the people I know with apnea had little luck with it...
I found the sleep study interesting but uncomfortable..And I never knew I snored!

5. I Use CPAP
lately I fall asleep and forget to put it on

i'm thinking about surgery because when i do that i often awaken with a very swollen uvula and my throat is in pain.

like today :(

i woke up when someone special called me in the night, and it didn't dawn on me that i didn't have my CPAP on.

So then i woke up at 4ish and couldn't sleep because of the swollen uvula. I've found that gargling with salt water, taking alka seltzer and letting it come in contact with the uvula both help that.

when i use my cpap i barely snore and feel much better

so i've become a moran lately about using it.

6. Hi Jimbo...
I had two sleep studies done, and if I recall, I was waking up 17 times an hour or something like that.

I use the machine, but the mouth piece certainly may work well for you.

You will not believe how much more energetic you will be when this problem gets fixed.

You did the right thing by having the study done. Good for you!

Best of luck Jimbo.

8. Fenris has sleep apnea.
His CPAP has been a lifesaver for him. I don't think he'd had a decent night's sleep in, well, forever. The doctor didn't think a mouthpiece would help because he already has pretty bad TMJ pain. Good luck to you - all I can say is that he felt better in a matter of days, it was amazing.

11. What do you mean by mouthpiece?
I was given a night guard for ear pressure that didn't respond to any drugs assuming it was some TMJ problem but it did nothing. Is it similar to that?

I'm having a sleep study the 2nd-3rd. I posted in the chronic health forum but my dad has sleep apnea and a gene associated with narcolepsy. So I'm getting the study that goes till about 2:00 so they can see if I go into REM quickly during the day. If insurance doesn't cover genetic testing I'm not doing it, I've already got almost $2K of dental bills this year my shitty insurance didn't cover and I'll have to use my entire deductible on the sleep study plus pay 20%.
