4. the whole paragraph--
Smart, friendly and funny, you have to wonder if anything ever upsets Will Smith's good nature.
"Well, if I understand the problem then I don't get annoyed," he explained. "People driving past in the car and giving me the finger annoys my wife but it's because they think you did something to them.
"They think you're driving too slow and keeping them from getting to their daughter's birthday party, or you cut them off and didn't see."
Remarkably, Will believes everyone is basically good.
"Even Hitler didn't wake up going, 'let me do the most evil thing I can do today'," said Will. "I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was 'good'. Stuff like that just needs reprogramming.
"I wake up every day full of hope, positive that every day is going to be better than yesterday. And I'm looking to infect people with my positivity. I think I can start an epidemic."

How the hell do yo go from talking about people flipping you the bird to Hitler?

36. More to the point, people just don't go around deciding to "do evil"...
If you study history, you'll find that the people who have done the most harm to the world have all been working from the assumption that they were doing the greatest good they could possibly accomplish. And, while Dubya isn't in the Hitler category, it's a good thing to remember when you think of how he is so certain that he is the leader of the forces of good against satanic evil.

37. Simply not true.
Do you truely believe Cheney thinks invading Iraq would spread freedom in the middle east ?

Or did Cheney want a long drawn out war that would never end so he could raid the treasury ?

Republicans KNOW that torture isn't the right thing to do, but they want to do it anyway. Your argument is hollow.

But in any case it was a really DUMB way to make an analogy.

15. That's a big leap, but
I understand his premise. Almost nobody that history deems as evil probably thought of themselves as evil while they were alive. He may have been insane, but I'm sure he thought by conquering the world and killing all the Jews, he could bring some sort of Pax Germania to the world.

Did the Atilla the Hun think of himself as evil? Genghis Khan? Stalin? The Spanish Inquisition?

17. What Will Smith Said Is 100% Correct
People who commit evil atrocities don't see themselves as evil. Everyone involved in the slave trade didn't see themselves as doing something morally repugnant. To this day, you can find people in the South who defend slavery.

As is my assessment of the situation at least.

19. i think will smith was making a point that is pretty obvious
hitler was deranged, sick, twisted, and just flat screwed up in the head. he honestly though he was doing "god's will" and what was "right" IN HIS MIND. correct me if i'm wrong, but will smith never said that hitler "wasn't that bad" but rather TMZ just decided to make something up and put it in his mouth. i think everyone can agree that hitler was bad and did horrible, evil things. however i think many also agree that hitler was also a head case. i don't think smith was saying what TMZ is trying to make it as. why don't people read the entire interview(or at least the entire part about that) before passing judgment instead of letting some trash news website pass judgment for us. tmz is the national enquirer of the net.. they twist things to create heat and traffic for their articles.

now let me hide before i get flamed for voicing my opinion. apparently you have to walk on pins and needles or else you're antisemitic. then again the same can be said for a lot of things.

21. Pardon me, there is absolutely no excuse for what Will Smith said...
he has no fucking idea what Hitler said or thought when he got up in the morning, no clue...and to attribute the most benign attributes to a man who was totally evil or totally nuts and evil is just inexcusable. In this world today we have people stealing children for ransom or to use as fodder in battle, we have women being raped and murdered, we have all sorts of unbelievable atrocities including the torture and murder of people by our own country so why, why does someone think they can excuse or explain a maniac like Hitler especially by saying that he probably didn't think he was doing wrong. GIVE ME A HUGE FUCKING BREAK PEOPLE!!!

25. Why don't you read what was said and get back to us
He wasn't trying to excuse what Hitler did. He was just making a *valid* point in that Hitler was just a brainwashed fool who was doing what *he thought* was right. This does not change the fact that what hitler did was obviously just about as fucking wrong and evil as possible.

Edited on Mon Dec-24-07 07:26 PM by rocknation
And he's right.

Caligula did, too. And Al Capone. And the Marquis De Sade. And Ted Bundy. And Vlad The Impaler. And Timothy McVeigh. And Napoleon. And Jim Jones.

Besides, are we supposed to not talk about Hitler at all, to pretend he never happened in the name of not offending anybody? That's the best way of allowing history to repeat itself.

31. Ugh, TMZ...
Will they stop at nothing to twist the words of celebrities to keep themselves at the top of the "We expose racist celebrities" barrel?

Smith is probably right, Hitler probably thought what he was doing was right. That doesn't exactly make him a Nazi sympathizer.
