Question RE: The Golden Compass * Spoilers*

Okay, I saw this last night and have a couple questions. I have not read the book and hope those here who have can shed some light on this.

Beware, spoilers ahead.

Okay, the movie just sort of ended. Did they shoot this like the lord of the rings? Back to back? I thought I saw a scene or two in the trailer that wasn't in the movie.

The scene to wards the end where the spy fly is set free and I assume stings Nicole Kidman,what happened exactly? We didn't see her after that and it looked obvious to me that Nicole was not available. I'm thinking of Bela Lugosi in Plan Nine from Outer Space. Was that Nicole's chiropractor or body double? I thought Nicole maybe was not available for some re shoots and they used her stunt double because it was pretty obvious she wasn't scene after that. My friend I saw it with said if she was stung then she may have been disfigured. If so, why keep it a secret? Can anyone explain or am I reading too much into that?
