I know when I lived in buffalo there was one community, Allentown, that was the well known hangout of artists (and the gay community). If someone put up a notice looking for other artists they'd get responses. Or if they put a notice in the local artvoice newspaper.

I really don't think classes will do much more for you. You need practice, models, and people to share your art with.
