8. yup -
my introduction to SNL was Jane taking her birthcontrol pill on camera . . .

The really funny part was - - - I had NO IDEA it was a comedy show. I thought I was watching the news. I was totally freaked and cracking up.

Then Chevy Chase started giving the "news".

:wtf:

oooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......... this isn't the real news!

29. Remember the one Samurai skit
with Buck Henry getting nicked by the sword? (a search said it was "Samurai Stockbroker", but can't find a clip)

After that, he showed up in later skits with a bandaid on his forhead and everyone else kept adding one before the show ended with them all sporting a bandaid on their foreheads :D

Oh, and the real Julia Child loved Dan Akroyd's parody of her :)

67. AMEN!!
All of those are great choices. I remember the first time I heard Akroyd say, "Jane, you ignorant slut", I almost choked because I was laughing so hard!

"Samurai everything" -- those skits absolutely killed me! Belushi was the best!

6. I'm here tonight to speak out against busting schoolchildren.
Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 08:46 PM by SOteric
Busting schoolchildren is a terrible, terrible thing. I hear this is going on all over the country. Mean policemen arrest little children and put them in jail in the wrong neighborhood, so they can't even play with their little friends. Imagine, busting schoolchildren! The food in jail isn't good, and even though they get bread, I don't believe they can get toast. Or nice cake. Now, who will tuck them in? Where will they hang their leggings? Where will they set up their little lemonade stands? Well, they don't have toys in jail, except maybe..

Chevy Chase: < interrupting > Miss Litella?

Emily Litella: Yes?

Chevy Chase: I'm sorry. The editorial was on bussing schoolchildren. Bussing. Not busting.

Emily Litella: Oh. Never mind.

But among all the SNLs, I think the best are Land Shark or Gilda Radner as Emily Litella. I know the latter isn't a "moment," but I still find myself thinking, "Oh that's different...never mind."

As well as Dan Ayckroyd imitating Nicholas von Hoffman on "Point/Counterpoint" on 60 Minutes, where Hoffman and Shana Alexander would debate... "Jane. You ignorant slut". Angry but deadpan.

...so many classics missing, so many marginal clips in E!'s list...

Where are:

1). Dan Aykroyd as Julia Child?

2). Joe Pesci and Robert DiNiro doing a walk-on during "The Joe Pesci Show?"

3). Blue Öyster Cult - Behind The Music? (easily one of the most popular clips of the entire run)

4). Colonel Angus?

...and that's just for starters...

20. Here's an obscure one: The real Desi ARNAZ machine-gunning a (fake) Lucy
This was several years after their split, with Lucy having gotten all the sympathy. It was a liberating moment for Desi. But now we hear that Lucy loved him to the end.\

This is like the Cher-Sonny thing. We believed Cher about how she was dominated by him and how she finally got free. We bought it. Then when he died, there she was with that eulogy saying how he really was the only one for her. Bah!1 I mean, I don't begrudge what was between them, but why did she string us all along?!1

A Glimpse Of Our Possible Future I

President George W. Bush.....Will Ferrell

Voice of Don Pardo: America, Election Day fast approaches, and with the Presidential Race still too close to call, "Saturday Night Live" would like to present "A Glimpse of our Possible Future".

(open on Scenario I)

Announcer: And now a Message From the President of the United States: George W. Bush.

(open on the Oval Office - beer cans on desk, socks hung on the lamp, a barbecue grill burning on his desk)

Voice of Advisor: Mr. President, get out there!

President George W. Bush: (from under his desk) No! No, you can't make me! You're gonna yell at me again!

Voice of Advisor: Mr. President!

President George W. Bush: (peeks out from under his desk) No! I don't want to go out, it's too hard!

Voice of Advisor: You're on, Sir!

President George W. Bush: Awww.. (jumps up and takes his seat) Hey, America! So, how we all doing out there, huh? Yeah, not so good. I broke the Hoover Dam.. we had that war thing happen. But I mean, who ever heard of a Civil War, anyway? What is that? (grabs a pair of binoculars, unscrews the lens, then pours alcohol from it into his mouth) I have missed you, ol' buddy! (pours it into his barbecue grill) Whoo! I think we can agree, Americans, that these have been a difficult first two years of my presidency..

Voice of Advisor: You've been President for two weeks!

President George W. Bush: Really? Oh, man! I told you, this is hard! Okay, listen.. I'm just gonna get this Address thing over with. As we assess the State of the American Union today, we have reason to hope, because.. (takes out a map which shows California and Florida as islands, Texas in Communist Mexico, and the Great Lakes on fire) Holy crap! When did all this happen?! Wow.. the Great Lakes are on fire - even I know that's not good. (laughs) Okay, America, we got a lot of problems. I ain't gonna lie to you. But with the help of Vice-President Dick Cheney..

Voice of Advisor: You killed him in a hunting accident!

George W. Bush: Okay, fine! Not a problem. 'Cause I've been working hard, I got a plan that's gonna solve all of it - from the deficit, to foreign relations, to that hole in the sun. Two words, America: Ostrich Meat.

Voice of Advisor: (disgusted) Oh, come on! (exits Oval Office)

President George W. Bush: No, no, wait, wait! Hear me out. You see, everyone gets an ostrich.. and then you eat the ostrich, then you raise the ostrich.. that way, no more ostriches! We are trying to get rid of all the ostriches, right? Anyone? (ball of fire erupts outside) Aw, screw! That big tit building is on fire again - damn! Alright, sorry, folks.. I gotta take care of this.. (stands up) Come on, Blue! Here, boy! (an ostrich ambles forward) You all go on ahead without me. And, in the meantime, "Live, from New York, it's Saturday Night!"

31. Two (plus) come to mind...
All the "President's Council on Drug Abuse.." or something close to that, where the entire skit was a close up of someone's hands attempting (and failing) to roll a joint. (And yes, it was supposed to be Gerald Ford's hands)

But my all time favorite is still Chevy Chase and Richard Pryor in the job interview word association test. ("N*****!" "Dead Honky!") I know it's politically incorrect and such a TV moment couldn't happen today, but those guys pulled it off and both blacks and whites could laugh at it.

63. Simon & Garfunkel - 1975
In addition to "The Boxer" there was a video (not sure if it was in the same epsisode) of people meeting loved ones at an airport to the tune of "Homeward Bound".

Early skits that I still chuckle over:

- Parodies of "Citizen Kane", "Highway Patrol" and "The Untouchables"
- The Land of Gorch!
- Shatner telling Trekkies to get a life

70. Paul Simon x2
In 1988, Paul Simon (the singer) was the guest host. When he was introduced at the start of the show, he walks out on stage from one direction, while Sen. Paul Simon, a candidate for president at the time, walks out from the other direction. The two stop and stare at each other, both trying unsuccessfully to hide silly grins.

Best part? I knew about it a day ahead of time. I was working as a press flunky on the Simon campaign, and we were dropping hints to reporters to watch SNL.

71. The first time they ever tried to do Debbie Downer,
everyone on the stage had a case of the giggles except for the actress playing Debbie. Every time she did one of her lines (which is always a statement of some awful fact), the entire cast except for her was forcing themselves to not laugh, with varying degrees of success. This turned out to be far funnier than how it was originally written. Since then, all the Debbie Downer skits have been straightforward, with everyone playing their roles perfectly... and the result is not as funny as that first time.

John Belushi and Peter Boyle both dressed as Brando from "The Wild Ones" doing competing Brando imitations with a background of the guitar/banjo duel. GENIUS.
