Aunt Pat is hurting

My aunt Pat is hurting.

She fell Thanksgiving night and broke her elbow and cracked her hip. She is in the hospital on morphine. She is 85 years old.

Aunt Pat:

Had Polio as a child.

One leg is shorter than the other as a result. She went through surgery after surgery, wore leg braces and special shoes her whole life. About 15 years ago she told the doctors to cut her leg off to ease her pain. They did when she was about 70. She was never happier (what courage!)

Life-long teacher, concert pianist, wife to Full-Bird Colonel (WWII) - Air Force, retired, she had time to raise two girls, become a gourmet chef and sit on the boards of Common Cause, League of Women Voters, chair the local Democratic Delegation and a slew of other Progressive Women's Groups.

She has a heart condition that might stop the Docs from operating on her elbow for fear she won't make it. (we didn't know about this condition until today).

Their 65th wedding anniversary was to be held on the 5th of December this year.

We don't know any more.

My own aunt/godmother is doing a fast fade at age 96. I go to be with her as many weekends as I can. When we're lucky we get to be the 'Honor Guard' for the journey they are on. No greater privilege. But then, you know that.
