1. Maybe. Their society permits the use of phones for certain purposes.

Some actually have phones of their own. I believe their
"rule of thumb" is that the phone must be far enough away
from their house that they can't hear it ring.

The Amish are not forbidden from ever using phones; they just don't usually have them in their homes, so they will go to the community store, or to pay phones.
