Bull riding: What do you think about it?

Well, I was flipping throught the channells today and noticed that NBC is airing some bull-riding event.


I really don't have a problem with it, myself. It seems kind of idiotic, but what do I know?

6. a blast from the ancient past

When I watch bull-riding, I can't help but think of ancient peoples in the Mediterrean/Near East areas who did the same sort of thing. There's something there about the relationship between humans and animals, especially the ones we depend on, that is holy, awe-inspiring in the core of one's being, and something about the life-and-death dance of nature that is celebrated in bull-fighting. The riders remind me of priests offering themselves as sacrifices. I'm always blown away by these very old continuities in human society. From a purely rational, standpoint, bull-riding is a stupid thing to do, cruel to both the cowboy and the bull. But we aren't purely rational, so I look forward to the next time I watch bull-riding.
