Why is walking so slow?!
2.2MPH, and my little walking jaunt yesterday took 2 hours.

I did see an improvement in how far I could jog before petering out, but still... I've got a lot of $h!+ to do and exercise takes up a lot of time, especially if (according to the tv news) sustained weight loss requires 2 solid hours of exercise per day. :wow:

1. What about bike riding?
It can be really good exercise and you can cover a lot of ground. You could also use the bike to run errands that are too far to walk to.

2. Nope. Two reasons:
1. Nobody sells those bicycles with 3 wheels with the little cart behind them anymore.

2. Due to hundreds of ear infections from childhood up until now, my internal balance mechanism is knackered. I've tried bike riding and I cannot go 80 feet without crashing.

I used to be a competent bike rider, though as a child I tumbled once or twice anyway... used to bike to work (4 miles one way).

3. For starters
I'd question that tv news statement. 2 solid hours of exercise each day?

Glad to see you out there taking care of yourself though, HT.

Oh, and if you think 2.2 mph is slow, be glad you're not a turtle.

4. My typical walking speed is faster than most...
I had no speed indicator, which hasn't helped, and I forgot to discount the two 10 minute breaks, maybe closer to 1.5 hours of solid walking/jogging (maybe 2.5/2.6 MPH)

As my neck felt a lot better afterward, even when carrying a brolly and photoshop CS3 box with me, so I know I'm on the right track...

Gotta continue taking care of myself. I know there's a future.

5. You'll be surprised how fast your body responds
It won't be long before you can run the entire way and running faster too. The body is amazing the way it responds to the stresses you put on it. Push it and it improves.

6. Try interval training and keep it to 30 minutes
Walk for a spell, then run, then walk, etc. I've read that IT increases the number of mitochondria in cells which will increase fat burning even when at rest. I had been getting back pain from doing sustained low-intensity on my elliptical so I switched to IT and I was able to increase the workout time from 24 to 30 minutes and the back problems went away, probably because the alternating intensity was using different muscles and postures.
