help me out - best jazz guitartist of the 50's - 60s'
Looking for that cool, smooth, chord-melody stuff.

Wes Montgomery?
Who?

Whats a good album of the old standards? "All the Things you Are", "Moonlight in Vermont" that kinda stuff.

1. Django Reinhardt

There is no other.

Although, if you go earlier than the 50s, Charlie Christian's real good too.

On edit: Oh, and Joe Pass was awesome

7. Yeah, you can't beat Joe Pass for the chord melody stuff.
Likely one the greatest players to ever pick up a guitar.

3. I'm a big Grant Green fan.
Check out his solo stuff or his work with Herbie Hancock and other Blue Note cats of the early sixties. Earlier in his career he played real fast, but got sort of slower and tastier as time went on. Check out Idle Moments, or the Best of Grant Green.

I'm psyched that he's still around. I love his work on Bill Evans' Interplay.

5. Johnny Smith was a very underated guitarist recording during that time.
Beautiful tone, nice single line chops, and great ballad playing.

I can't recommend a specific album, but iTunes has a couple you can check out.

10. TAL FARLOW!!!!!!!!!
I had to use all capital letters. There's lots of good suggestions here, but Tal is THE MAN!

Another one: Eric Gale. Very underappreciated. Wonderful player.

11. I consulted the guy who hosts our program on 50s-60s jazz
Here is his recommendation:

There's a Grant Green CD on Blue Note called Standards that may be just the
person is looking for. Barney Kessel's Poll Winners on Contemporary also
has a some standards on it. Kenny Burrell's A Night at the Vanguard on
Chess has a few standards and a live audience. You can't go wrong with any
of these.

12. See message.
Moonlight in Vermont was a hit for Johnny Smith, a fabulous guitarist. All of his stuff from that period is available on a Mosaic Records cd box set. www.mosaicrecords.com Also, Tal Farlow and Jimmy Raney, same, although their stuff is out of print on Mosaic; still available in other pressings.

20. Glad you liked it. They're the best.
If you're looking for more guitar players from different periods, let me know. I play guitar as a hobby so I collect some stuff. Jazz, folk, blues, classical. Now, those classsical guys will just bury you with how good they are, especially the ones who know how to make music as opposed to showing off.

Yeah, Mosaic is a great site and a great company to deal with. Sometimes, they have extra, odd discs and booklets laying around that they'll sell separately.

oriented toward country-western than jazz.

Similar to Wes Montgomery.

Pat Metheny converted to the true faith after he saw Wes Montgomery perform. Pat couldn't have been older than about twelve.
