...start gulping freshwater as soon as you hit the shore. Don't be stupid about it, but drink at least one 20-oz bottle of freshwater if you've ingested any seawater. This will help keep your metabolism from going haywire and your cells from dehydrating.

Your pee may also hurt like hell for a while because of the extra salt your body must excrete, but this depends on how much freshwater you dilute the seawater with. When in doubt, hydrate.

A similar phenomenon happened to me at Camp Casey in 100-degree weather two years ago. You sweat so much that you don't even urinate anymore, so all the salts that collect in your kidneys just stay there, sitting in your kidneys with nothing to do. First time you finally pee after that, it's gonna hurt unless you were smart enough to hydrate yourself sometime during the rallies.

So please, keep your freshwater handy, especially at the beach or in scorching heat, and most especially if you're experiencing both.
