My new pet peeve
is people saying the word "isn"t" without the s. As it, innit. I've heard it from real people only rarely, thank god. This seems to be something TV hosts and other educated people, especially women, think is cool. It makes my skin crawl because I know these people were not saying this word like that just a year ago. They are doing it intentionally.:puke:

3. How about the use of 'of' instead of 'have'...
as in "I should of..." rather than "I should have..." I live in Oklahoma where English is a foreign language.

4. Could that possibly be the contraction "should've"?
But, if they are saying it slowly enough that it sounds like two words, well, that's a problem.

10. Possibly, but I think they need to prove that they know what a contraction is first

20. Really?
That's interesting. I can't really comment on that since I haven't heard UKers do it, but the Americans I heard just sound bad IMO.

12. I have a friend who commonly says "dinference" instead of "difference"
He's no dummy, and I've been working hard to correct this hick-ism for close to twenty years, with no success.

I share your dislike of "innit."

14. I'm often at the mercy of English grammar nazis
English is my second language and I often massacre it. Some examples:

No killing! (no kidding!)
Asshole and hassle sound the same to me and I often confuse the two.
To sleep with (coucher avec) is not dirty. It's merely sleeping!

And many others.........

That's funny about hassle--could lead to some bad misunderstandings I would imagine. :)

15. I love it when people use "axed" instead of "asked".
I don't know, people just sound much more intelligent when they speak that way.
