I switched to bare-bones basic cable, and I feel great!
Edited on Sun Aug-03-03 11:30 AM by Gringo
I know it would be best to chuck the TV altogether, but I need an occasional fix. I used to pay over $35 per month for the dish - 150 channels of pure crap-ola. I finally got sick of it, sold the dish and got the cheapest basic cable (antennas don't work well in Miami) Now I pay $12 per month, and I get :
PBS
CBS
NBC
FOX
UPN
ABC
PBS2
WTBS
the WB
DISCOVERY
CSPAN 1 & 2
and about a dozen home-shopping, public access and Spanish channels that I block.

I will miss comedy central, but I won't miss CNNwhore, MSNBCwhore, or FOXNewswhore at all.

TV is crap. We all know it. Do yourself a favor, save some money, and reduce your exposure to it, or cut it out altogether. You will not die if you don't know what happened on the latest episode of "Sex and the City" I promise!

Besides, you can use the money you save to rent DVDs and be more selective in what you watch. Protect your precious mind!

1. I did the same thing
to save money. The only bad part was that Faux was part of the line up, and then got removed, which I don't miss. It was all Laci Peterson, pretty much.

But I do miss court tv and a few other channels.

The rest is crap.

2. I did it Nov 6, 2002! I woke up with a hole in the pit of my stomach
and did the only thing that made me feel better which was to Drop the cabal's cable news like a rock.

Haven't regretted it, either!

Only Jon Stewert I miss but DU2ers fill me in! :kick:

And to give to DU2, and Liberal Radio like the Guy James Show, and donate to my Presidential Candidate! :kick:

5. I envy your strength.
I get sucked in by some shows still.

Don't watch near as much as I did in my youth though.

6. i'm about to do this too
I don't know if I can live without Comedy Central and the TNT Law & Order reruns. (And, OK, I admit it.... Lifetime movies. Moment of Truth!!!)

But I am paying $50+/mo for digital cable and it's just got to stop. Lots of my TV time is background noise anyway - bad habit from living alone for so long.

(Maybe I can downgrade to basic cable & upgrade to live-in-lovah at the same time! OK, I've been online toooo longggg)

9. TV isn't so bad...
but they're are a lot of shitty programs out there. I won't even go near the "news" networks.

If you're really not a TV person, buy an antenna for a one-time price of about $45. You'll get NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS and any other broadcast only networks for free.

It's worth doing if you live in an urban community.

10. But what about Monster Garage, or
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, or the Crocodile Hunter? Those are some great shows. And I always skip right through the cable news channels. BBC World on local PBS works great for me.

12. What about a BUD/ Big Ugly Dish? the old K band
I would expect you could pluck cspan 1,2,3 out of the ether without paying for it. You could skip the subscription for Discovery, History, USA, whatever...

13. Way to go! Anyone else who's interested, you may have to raise hell
with your cable provider, but a threat to cancel your subscription should get you the unadvertised bare-bones package.

15. I did this & I think more and more people will over time...
As computers and the internet speed up, we'll be able to avoid the din of commercial television. This is also why TiVo, ReplayTV, and other DVRs have become hot -- because there is simply TOO MUCH...and it's either be more selective or become a cabbage.
