Firefighters beaten by angry teens for holding up traffic
http://www.11alive.com/news/article_news.aspx?storyid=98088

Boston police are searching for a group of teens who attacked two firefighters while the men were on the job.

Firefighter Christopher Corwin was helping a tractor-trailer driver who had stopped by the firehouse to ask for directions when the attack occurred.

As Corwin and another firefighter, Danny Donahoe, were directing traffic so that the tractor-trailer could turn around, occupants in one of the stopped cars grew angry about the delay.

The four suspects then jumped out of the car and beat the Corwin and Donahoe with baseball bats.

2. When they find the kids
maybe they can use them in a practice burn.

5. eh
the cops up here are alright as well. :bounce:

Still, if I saw guys wailing on firefighters with baseball bats, I'd have probably tried to run them over. You can kill with those things, and no DAs going to prosecute me

11. Yeah.
Because the kids would be in jail now, after being tasered, maced, or whacked with a baton. And it would serve them right.

12. Because cops would've kicked their asses and arrested them.

15. I think you just changed the subject.
Skillfully done, I'll happily admit.

Perhaps you can get back to why cops should be attacked with baseball bats, and why that's a good idea.

18. generally speaking (and applying the broadest of brushes)
i'm not altogether fond of law enforcement and the almost godlike powers they assume.

my opinion radically changed in 2005 when they stormed into my brother's apartment (after saying "we don't need a fucking warrant" when my brother initially refused them entry) and started yelling "GET ON THE FUCKING FLOOR MOTHERFUCKER NOW!!!!" with guns drawn and everything.

my brother has a shaven head and lots of tats. in the chicago inner ring suburb in which we were living, that means "gang profile" and the biggest cop out of all them had him subdued on the floor, in cuffs, and was punching him about the head, face, and neck while saying, "you ain't so tough now, punk motherfucker, fucking bitch."

i was on the floor a few feet away (i look like a suburbanoid) watching my brother get the shit knocked out of him while i was in cuffs.

the only black officer got me to my feet amid the fracas, and the look in his face told me he was scared. scared of his fellow policemen. he said, "get in the living room."

they whisked my brother past me and took him out the busted front door. i could hear my brother say, "don't throw me down the stairs" and they did. we were on the second floor.

they kept me in the apartment and a cocky young cop kept radioing back and forth trying to make a case to arrest me on obstruction of justice and felony assault on an officer to the commander (who was on his way).

i came to find out later, the cop who beat up my brother in the apartment stopped on the way to the station and beat him up some more behind the jr. high. when they got to the station about 7 or 8 beat him in the parking lot.

they had to take him to the er. his discharge papers said that he had injuries consistent with an assault and battery.

i left the inner ring suburb right after and went to my ex-gf's on the north side. the inner ring suburb's police had my cell number and called me later wanting me to come in to the station to talk to the state's attorney to "work it out." the lieutenant's words were something like, "we all kinda got out of hand."

so, on the particular side, i'm sure some individual cops are decent, but these are the exception not the rule.

hence, my statement about cops getting beat up with baseball bats.

21. Thanks. I do understand the way you feel.
And now I also understand WHY you feel that way. Your brother was indeed treated horribly. No argument there. In fact, I wish that the ones who were being evil shitheads should have been investigated, and either fired or prosecuted.

My perspective is a little different than yours; perhaps because of location, circumstances, and personal dealings.

I'm one of the few non-cops in my family. In fact, they were all surprised when I decided that the cop-life wasn't my going to be my gig. My step-dad is a retired detective, Mom is a former Highway Patrol dispatcher, and my brother is a current police officer (who is pretty cool when he's not being a Republican - still he's a nice guy and a good cop)

I've had some run-ins with asshole cops myself, but in my experience, most of them are regular guys/gals who are doing their job to the best of their ability. I've known a lot of cops my entire life (since I was a baby, to be honest), and most of them (not all) are OK by me.

All that said, I do understand how you feel, and don't begrudge you that.

Peace.

22. mmm, Chicago. It's the New New York
Sadly. Seems like police brutality travels from city to city. LA in the early 90s, NYC in the late 90s, now Chicago. Miami will be next

26. well
that's a fucking shitty story, and I understand the hostility. But you can hardly say that decent cops are the exception. You've only experienced the shitty cops, it's hardly fair to paint all cops with a single anecdote.

6. The Glob version of the story has a telling detail
"Then, four men wearing New York Yankees caps, all believed to be in their 20s, rushed out of the car and began beating Corwin,..."

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2007/06/05/firefighter_helping_driver_is_attacked_in_charlestown/

Wearing Yankees caps in Charlestown -- they were looking for a fight.

9. It was retribution for Matt Damon wearing a Red Sox shirt through NYC yesterday
Either way, there's too much testosterone sitting around waiting to fly off the handle in baseball. Including the managers.

7. If they ever find those kids, they are so fucked.
Attacking firefighters on the job I believe is a pretty serious felony. That and firefighters are the most trusted civil servants, so any jury is bound to be moderately hostile at the outset.

24. that is bullshit on a stick
beating on a firefighter is crap. The yankee hats mean nothing because I've seen too many dudes who wear it strictly as a fashion statement.
