Will my mother in law hate me forever?
Edited on Thu May-24-07 08:32 PM by SarahBelle
My mother in law is the nicest lady, but she's kind of quiet and I'm trying to get along with my new in-laws (fortunately everyone else in my husband's family are all kind of smart asses, so I mostly fit). Today, I get a phone call.

I answer, "Hello."

Woman's voice, "Is this Pat X?"

I answer (thinking anyone who knows Pat X.- my husband- knows he's a guy), "Pat X. is a man!"

The voice said, "I know... Uh, I'm sorry. I'll call back later."

Realizing it's someone who probably knows him, I say, "Can I help you with something?"

The woman says, "Who is this?"

I say, "Pat's wife."

She says, "Oh, it's Kathy (his mom)." :o

So after I apologize and try to explain I thought she was a telemarketer, I'm left feeling like a big turd. She was very nice about it though.

1. Nope.
Based on your posting here, nobody could hate you forever. She's probably just shy, and will take longer than the rest of the family to getcomfrtable with you.

:hi:

6. Nah...
...if she's anything like my mother in law, she'll remind you about it forever though. Usually in the form of an amusing yet embarrassing anecdote.

21. That would be my father in law.
Let's hope he doesn't find out. Fortunately, I don't get the feeling they have the best communication there. :yoiks:

7. I should think she'd applaud your gender-identity skillz
which are particularly important for one in the medical profession.

Like, you could red-flag Pat X's chart if a hysterectomy were scheduled.

23. That's what I thought was weird.
I have a very girly voice (nope, nothing remotely resembling Kathleen Turner here) and his is very deep.

13. She was probably as embarassed as you were.
I'm a mother-in-law myself, and I think she will love you as long as her son loves you.

15. Caller ID is a most wonderful thing
Our phone package isn't big, we HATE call waiting. However, Caller ID has saved us many times over. My FiL and SiL aren't crazy about me, so when I see they're calling I run after my spouse for him to pick up, or I let it go to answering. There's just no need to make a difficult situation even more difficult.

19. We've got it.
For some reason it's not working on the upstairs phone for the last few weeks. Maybe it's time to replace it.

Does she live nearby? Maybe you should get together for coffee sometime...

25. We don't live that close (about 200 miles).
BUT... we're going to be there this weekend. She and I are usually the first ones up in the morning, so we'll have a chance to talk. I think of nice belated Mother's Day gift might be good too (probably a nice bottle of wine). Last time we were there, we talked and had a couple glasses of wine together. My husband said, "I think she just opened up to you more than she did in the 12 years I was with my ex-wife." So we have a decent relationship thus far. I just don't want to blow it (my ex's mom died before I met him so MILs in all new territory for me).

I agree with the coffee thing. Have a friendly get-together, just you and her.

Didn't she realize her son's wife may be on the phone?
